SPORTS SHORTS: Pfantz leads Trojan girls at Dan Gable Donnybrook

CORALVILLE — West Marshall girls wrestling’s 120-pounder Carli Pfantz finished eighth in her bracket at the girls portion of the Dan Gable Donnybrook that ran Thursday and Friday at the Xtream Arena in Coralville.

The Trojans scored 171 team points to finish 17th out of 43 teams competing from all across Iowa as well as several from neighboring states. Decorah captured the team title with 408 points and Waverly-Shell Rock was second with 367.

Pfantz pinned her way to the quarterfinals before losing by fall to Vinton-Shellsburg’s Bree Swenson, the second-ranked 120-pounder by the IWCOA.

Liz Ramirez of Lockport Township (Illinois) won an 8-1 decision over Pfantz in her first consolation match, and Dubuque Wahlert’s Ava McDermott won by fall in the 7th-place match.

West Marshall’s Cieanna Ficken went 5-1 at 130 pounds to finish ninth and Averie Wittkop went 4-1 to place ninth at 170.

Storjohann grabs gold at St. Ansgar

ST. ANSGAR — Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center sophomore wrestler Grace Storjohann won the 125-pound bracket at Saturday’s St. Ansgar Girls Invite.

Storjohann won her first two matches by fall against Brooklyn Burke and Odessa Nibbelink of Crestwood and received a forfeit from Clear Lake’s Pieper Lester in the finals.

Kayden Muller was the runner-up at 135 after a 2-1 day, while Ellie Reints was third at 135. Zoey Uhlenhopp and Lila Reints each won both of their matches in a 155-pound round robin.

Wheater wins, Mustangs 7th at Woodward-Granger

WOODWARD — Drew Wheater won the 190-pound championship as East Marshall/GMG/Meskwaki boys wrestling finished seventh at the Dennis Field Invitational at Woodward-Granger High School on Saturday.

Wheater went 3-0 and pinned AC/GC’s Michael Fuller in the second period for the 190-pound title. The Mustangs finished with 97.5 points in the team standings; Earlham won the team title with 191 points.

EM/GMG/Meskwaki added a pair of bronze medalists with Cade Burchland going 1-2 to finish third in a round robin at 106 and Johnathan Edel was third at 215 pounds with a first-period pin in the third-place match with Colfax-Mingo’s Donovan Baucom.

Storm boys wrestling starts 2-0

HUDSON — South Hardin-BCLUW boys wrestling defeated Waterloo Columbus and Hudson in triangular action at Hudson High School on Thursday.

The Storm started with a 58-18 win over Columbus. Chance Cordes (144 pounds), Beau Towne (150), Sam Garber (175) and Will Feldpausch (113) won their matches by pinfall and Zaden Eggers won a 14-3 major decision at 138 pounds. SH-BCLUW also claimed five forfeits.

In a 44-36 victory over Hudson, the Storm started with three consecutive wins from Eggers, Cordes and Towne. Hudson got two forfeits at 106 and 113 to get within 33-30 with three weights remaining, but pins for Feldpausch and Maverick Grafke clinched the dual for the Storm.

Wyatt Guiles, Alex Paxson and Sean May added pins against the Pirates.

A-P/GC boys goes 1-2 at North Tama quad

TRAER — Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center boys wrestling claimed the only area victory from a quad at North Tama on Thursday.

A-P/GC benefited from six North Tama forfeits in a 60-24 win over the hosts. Carter Liston (132 pounds), Gage Miller (138) and Dylan Knaack (157) all added wins by fall for the Falcons.

The Falcons lost 42-41 to Vinton-Shellsburg and fell 48-36 to Union Community.

Jesse Brouwer (190) and Colton Harken (215) had pinfall victories against the Knights, with three more pins for Liston, Miller and Knaack.

Austin Shepard (126), Justin Knaack (150), Riley Forbes (215) and Trent Cakerice (285) were pinfall winners against Vinton-Shellsburg, as were Miller and Dylan Knaack.

The Redhawks won more head-to-head matches in the dual with A-P/GC, with pinfall victories for Maxon Monat (106), Drayke Dvorak (113), Kolt Knaack (144) and Gavin Rausch (150). All head-to-head matches were completed in the first period.

Maxon Monat, Case Monat (126), Kolt Knaack and Drake Podhajsky (157) had wins in a 60-21 loss to Vinton-Shellsburg. In a 65-9 win for Union Community, Kolt Knaack won a 12-5 decision and Podhajsky won by fall.

In girls action, A-P/GC’s Grace Storjohann scored a second-period pin over Ava Monat of North Tama while Faith Dvorak struck back for the Redhawks with a 9-7 decision over Kayden Muller.

A-P/GC won two against the Union-GR girls — Storjohann and Zoey Uhlenhopp collected pinfall victories for the Falcons.

North Tama’s girls added three pinfall wins against Union; Grace Dvorak, Ava Monat and Addison Hochstetler all had their arms raised.
