SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans stomp East Marshall for fifth straight win

GRUNDY CENTER — Three players scored in double figures as the Grundy Center girls’ basketball team got its fifth straight win, beating East Marshall 55-15 in Friday’s NICL West Division contest.

Carlie Willis led the Spartans (7-1, 3-0) with 15 points, while Kali Aldrich and Ellery Luhring had 10 points apiece. Grundy Center led 18-4 after the first period and poured it on from there.

Morgan Neuroth led East Marshall (3-6, 0-3) with nine points, Alivia Neuroth had four points and Ava Bringmann added a basket.

Barnes’ big night propels Trojans to HOIAC victory

JEFFERSON — Lucas Barnes scored a career-high 16 points to go with nine rebounds in leading the West Marshall boys’ basketball team to a 66-31 triumph over Greene County on Friday night.

It marked the first Heart of Iowa Conference win of the season for the Trojans (2-5, 1-4), who led 36-13 at the half. Preston Reese tabbed 11 points, Owen Siegert had eight points and five assists, and Caden Pfantz picked up seven points. Noah DeSotel contributed six points, while Cash Johnston had six points and nine boards.

Brynley Ruzicka led Greene County (0-8, 0-5) with 12 points.

Grundy Center boys fill it up against Mustangs

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center boys’ basketball team scored its season-high for the third straight game, beating East Marshall 79-31 in Friday’s NICL West Division showdown.

Five players scored at least nine points each for the Spartans (5-2, 3-0), who won their fourth straight. Colin Gordon made three 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 18 points. Ryker Thoren poured in 15 points, Brayden Wallis had 13, Judd Jirovsky 11 and Tiernan Vokes nine.

Landen Neuroth led East Marshall (2-4, 1-1) with 10 points and Jackson Bidwell finished with nine. Alex Jacobson and Leland Hamilton-Youngbird added five pints apiece.

Trojans sweep conference foes at Perry

PERRY — West Marshall boys wrestling scored convincing victories over South Hamilton and Perry in Heart of Iowa action at Perry High School on Thursday.

The Trojans poured it on shorthanded South Hamilton, 66-16, receiving six forfeits. West Marshall also won five head-to-head matches, all by pinfall, with Ben Gonzalez (165 pounds), Gage Sawyer (215), Ben Buck (126), Kinnick Geers (144) and Dillon McMorran (150) having their arms raised.

Four forfeit victories also made a big difference in a 53-30 Trojan win over Perry. The two teams split 10 head-to-head matches with Geers, McMorran, Shane Hanford (138) and Wade Weuve (157) winning by fall and Jack Decker capturing a 19-3 technical fall at 120.

STC boys split at Clear Creek Amana

TIFFIN — South Tama County boys wrestling picked up a win over Vinton-Shellsburg at a Clear Creek Amana triangular on Thursday.

The Trojans beat the Vikings, 49-27. Gavin Bridgewater (215 pounds), Amare Chavez (126), MaCael Bear (138), Anthony Thompson (150), Kinzer Jaennette (157), and Cyrus Mathes (165) all won by fall for STC. Ramiro Saquic Xirum (120) earned a major decision, Clayton Babinat (132) won by 4-2 decision and Kyan McBride (285) received a forfeit.

CCA defeated STC 53-18. Chavez won by fall, Babinat earned a 14-1 major decision and Bear was a 15-9 winner.

STC girls wrestlers clap Clippers

TIFFIN — South Tama County girls wrestling lost only one head-to-head match in a 72-6 romp at Clear Creek Amana.

In addition to eight wins by forfeit, Autumn Elsbury (170 pounds), Taylor Johannsen (105), Marlie McBride (115), Paisley Bro (135) and Abigail Chyma (155) won by fall.

Elsbury is ranked No. 2 at 170 in the latest rankings from the IWCOA. Chyma is tied for ninth at 155 pounds and Maeley Elsbury is ranked second at 135 pounds.

A-P/GC boys win twice at Denver

DENVER — Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center boys wrestling went 2-1 at a quadrangular with East Marshall/GMG/Meskwaki and North Butler-Clarksville at the Cyclone Center in Denver on Thursday.

A-P/GC beat the Mustangs, 54-27, and topped NB-C 47-30.

The Falcons received five forfeits against EM/GMG/Meskwaki. Gage Miller (132 pounds), Dylan Knaack (150), Ryder Slifer (157) and Kael Edwards (106) won by fall. Mustang winners were Drew Wheater (190) by decision, Johnathan Edel (215) by injury time and Nohlan Coon (113), Cooper Lenz (120) and Jordan Meling (126) by fall.

In the dual with NB-C, Miller, Slifer, Colton Harken (215), Trent Cakerice (285) and Carter Liston (126) won by fall. Klayton Freed earned a tech fall at 165 pounds.

Denver defeated A-P/GC, 52-27. Miller, Jesse Brouwer, Harken and Cakerice pinned their opponents and Parker Mulder was an 8-5 winner at 138.

The Cyclones also topped EM/GMG/Meskwaki 69-9. Edel claimed a fall and Meling was a 6-4 winner by decision. NB-C defeated the Mustangs 67-12 with a forfeit victory for Wheater and a pinfall for Edel.

Grundy bowlers edge New Hampton

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center boys bowling held on to defeat New Hampton by 64 pins and remain undefeated on Thursday at the Crystal Bowl.

The Spartans won 2,959-2,895 and improved to 3-0. The Chickasaws came up eight pins short the last time the teams met on Dec. 1.

Michael Lang had the high series with a 447 and Jacob Hoy rolled a 438 series. Britt Meyer scored a 392 and Noah Sealman and Gabe McMartin had a 384 and 323, respectively.

Grundy Center outscored New Hampton in the baker games, 975-947.

SH-BCLUW girls compete at Battle of Waterloo

WATERLOO — The South Hardin-BCLUW girls wrestling team battled with some of the best wrestling teams in the area at Thursday’s Battle of Waterloo tournament.

The Storm finished sixth in Bracket B. West Delaware won 53-18 in the first dual of the day, with pinfall victories for Ceanna White (120 pounds), Taya Hollingsworth (145 pounds) and Kailan McEwen (170).

SH-BCLUW defeated Norwalk 48-24 in the consolation semis. White, McEwen and Leila Wedgwood (125) all won by fall and the Storm added five forfeit victories to cruise to the fifth-place match. Charles City won that match, 42-36. The Storm had a 4-3 advantage in the head-to-head matches but surrendered four forfeits. White, Hollingsworth, McEwen and Jaelynn Poage (135) won by fall.

From there, the Storm moved to pool play with the sixth-place teams from Brackets A and C. West Des Moines Valley beat SH-BCLUW 39-30 even though the Storm split the eight head-to-head matches. Wedgwood, Raegan Crawford, Hollingsworth and White won by fall.

In the final dual of the day for the Storm, Linn-Mar won 46-30. Hollingsworth, Wedgwood and Crawford were winners by fall.

Spartans shut down West Marshall girls 47-18

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center girls’ basketball team held West Marshall to single-digit in all four quarters of a 47-18 victory in Thursday’s non-conference clash.

Carlie Willis scored a game-high 18 points to lead Grundy Center (6-1), which won its fourth in a row. Ellery Luhring added 12 points and Karlee Lynch chipped in with six for the Spartans, who led 25-11 at halftime and continued to pull away.

Lily Zahnd, Natalie Nichols and Shelby Johnston scored four points apiece to pace West Marshall (4-3).
