Bobcat boys swim laps around DM Roosevelt
DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ swimming squad won nine of 11 events and outscored Des Moines Roosevelt 95-75 for a victory in Tuesday’s first meet back from the winter break.
The Bobcats captured 28 season-best times and also recorded 10 lifetime-bests in the win.
“We won by a little bit safer of a margin than I had figured,” MHS head coach Mike Loupee said. “It was kind of a mixed bag. Some guys swam well, sometimes it looked like we had swam over 10,000 yards a day for the last two weeks. But overall we competed. No matter what the time was, they were competing and raced well.”
Michael Lechnir and Lincoln Barker set the pace for Marshalltown, as both won all four of their respective events. Lechnir won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races and also swam the opening leg of the triumphant 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Barker booked the top spot the 200 and 500 freestyle events and anchored the same relays as Lechnir.
Barker swam the closing leg of the 200 medley relay to open the meet and turned around to win the very next race, the 200 freestyle, in a season-best time of 1 minute, 56.91 seconds. His winning 500 freestyle time was a season-best 5:14.35.
Sam Greazel was a part of three gold-medal performances for MHS, winning the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke on his own. He also swam the breaststroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay as all three swims were season-best times. He also posted a lifetime-best split in the 200 freestyle relay, which came in second to Des Moines Roosevelt.
Bobcat junior Hayden Daters also earned some praise from coach Loupee for his efforts, as he recorded three lifetime-best times on the night. He was fourth in the 50 and 100 freestyle and anchored the third-place 200 medley relay.
Marshalltown is back in action next Tuesday with a home meet against Mason City serving as the Bobcats’ senior night.
