Bobcats’ Lantigua qualifies for girls state wrestling

CEDAR RAPIDS — Gigi Lantigua made Marshalltown girls wrestling history on Friday.

The 170-pounder is the first Bobcat girls wrestler in history to qualify for state after placing fourth in the Region 5 bracket at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids.

She will wrestle at the Xtream Arena in Coralville for the second IGHSAU state tournament scheduled for Feb. 1-2.

Lantigua won her first two matches with first-period pinfalls, but was bested by Izzy Strickert of Independence in the semifinals. Strickert went on to win the bracket.

Bouncing back in consolations with a second-period pin of Midland’s Gracee Tompkins clinched her spot, even after a loss to Denver’s McKenna Broadhead in the third-place match.

Nintee Tarr was fifth at 140 pounds, missing out on state qualification; Ruby Arana placed sixth at 105. Kaitlyn Yepez (110 pounds), Rayna Bastidas (115), Ava Kusserow (120), Velkis Zelaya (125), and Mia Zazueta (145) all went 1-2 on the day. Addyson Lovelace was 2-2 at 130 pounds and Rhayne Morales finished 0-2 at 155.
