Gomez leads MHS to third at J-Hawk Invite

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Marshalltown boys’ wrestling team crowned one champion on its way to a third-place finish at Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s J-Hawk Invite on Monday.
Bobcat junior Johan Gomez won the title at 215 pounds, while six other Marshalltown matmen scored second place in their respective weights.
Gomez won his weight class with a 3-0 record for the day, each victory coming by pinfall. He pinned Parker Chyma and Colin Woods, both of Cedar Rapids Jefferson, and ended with a third-period pin of Dubuque Hempstead’s Tate Woodruff.
Second-place finishes went to Marshalltown’s Damien Rodriguez (113 pounds), Lucas Bantz (126), Nicholas Wise (132), Carson Wright (150), Xayvion Anderson (157) and Dalton Zednichek (165).
Rodriguez went 3-1 with three pins before being defeated by Landon Gottschalk of Hempstead, 6-4. Bantz was 4-1 with two pins and a technical fall, falling 11-4 to Evan Bratten of Hempstead. Wise went 2-1 in his bracket, bowing out of the finals due to a medical forfeit.
Wright went 4-1 with three pins after falling in the first period to Cael Smithhart of Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Anderson reached the finals of his bracket with a pin and a decision before getting edged, 8-2, by Nolan Riddle of Fort Madison. Zednichek’s 4-1 day included two pins, a technical fall and a major decision. His lone loss came by fall to Kennedy’s Colin Falck.
Colby Cross (120) and Kenton Niehouse (144) both placed fourth, Robert Almanzo (138) was fifth, Ivan Pantoja (138) finished sixth and Michael Narvaez Correa (175) was seventh.
Marshalltown’s 180 team points placed the Bobcats third in the J-Hawk Invite. Dubuque Hempstead was the champion with 237.5 points and Cedar Rapids Kennedy was second with 195 in the eight-team tournament.
