SPORTS SHORTS: Buzzer-beater comes up empty for Trojans

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team came up empty on three tries in its final possession, suffering a 50-48 loss to Saydel in Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.

The Trojans (2-7, 1-6) trailed by seven at halftime, 30-23, but completed their comeback with 25 seconds left in the game. A 3-pointer by Owen Siegert got West Marshall back to even, 48-all, before the visiting Eagles (4-5, 2-5) worked the clock for a late layup to go in front again. West Marshall had three shots to force overtime or take the lead, but none of them found their target as time expired.

AJ Dee led the Trojans with 13 points, Siegert scored 11 and Andrew Tollefson finished with eight points. DJ Ridout and Cash Johnston added six points apiece.

No. 5 Iowa State tops No. 21 Arizona State, 28-10

CHANDLER, Ariz. — The fifth-ranked Iowa State wrestling team toppled No. 21 Arizona State on Friday, 28-10, inside Hamilton High School.

Iowa State wrestlers Cody Chittum and Yonger Bastida both defeated top-5 wrestlers to highlight the Cyclones’ first match of the new year.

The Cyclones (7-1) won eight of 10 matches and won the takedown battle, 22-10.

Kysen Terukina got ISU on the board first at 125 pounds with a 12-6 decision over Tristan Mascarenas. Anthony Echemendia scored a 19-4 technical foul over Cody Foote at 141, and Chittum’s 9-5 triumph gave the Cyclones the lead for good.

David Carr pounded out a 19-4 technical fall at 165, MJ Gaitan won an 8-4 decision at No. 40, and Will Feldkamp outlasted No. 29 Tony Negron 19-4.

Julien Broderson got to his offense late in an 11-4 decision over Jacob Meissner. In the dual’s featured bout, No. 3 Bastida took on No. 5 Cohlton Schultz at heavyweight. Bastida got an early takedown against Schultz, who made his season debut for the Sun Devils, and won 4-3.

Bobcat bowlers split in first match back from break

The Marshalltown bowling teams split Thursday’s home dual meet with Waterloo East at Wayward Social.

The Bobcat girls got a win in their first Iowa Alliance Conference North Division dual meet, beating the Trojans 2,027-1,804. Marshalltown scored a season-high in the victory, sparked by a pair of season-high performances.

MHS sophomore Camillya Thomas tallied her career-best 313 series, led by her high game of 167. Bobcat junior Kenedy Lammert added her best game and series of the season, as a 156 game paved the way to her 281 series. Sydney May also rolled a 281 series, while Devin Peterson (253) and Ariana Villagomez (237) also contributed to the final team score.

Samantha Lonergan led Waterloo East with a 282 series.

The Marshalltown boys rolled their low score of the season in a 2,700-2,590 loss to the visiting Trojans. Tyler Peterson propeled Waterloo East to the divisional win with a 256 game and a 456 series.

Jayden Beichley led Marshalltown with a 225 game and a 431 series. Zach Morris rolled a 187 game to compile a 347 series, and Carter McCready added a 337 set. Tucker Wedgwood (304) and Porter Niedermann (302) rounded out the Bobcats’ individual scoring.

Trojans reign supreme over Mustang matmen

LE GRAND — The West Marshall wrestling team tallied seven wins by pinfall and put away East Marshall/GMG/Meskwaki with a decisive 60-17 victory over the Mustangs in Thursday’s cross-county dual.

All 10 West Marshall wins were six-point scorers for the Trojans, who totaled seven wins by pin and three more from forfeits. Piling up the pins for West Marshall were: James Decker (106 pounds), Jon Gonzalez (113), Kinnick Geers (144), Dillon McMorran (150), Wade Weuve (157), Gage Sawyer (215) and Luke Steward (285).

East Marshall had four match victories, highlighted by a pin for Johnathan Edel at 190. Xavier Slifer scored a 15-0 technical fall of Landin Eggers at 126, while minor decisions came from Cooper Lenz (132) and Drew Wheater (175).
