Cowan’s big game lifts Bobcats at conference
WATERLOO — Marshalltown sophomore Aiden Cowan rolled the team’s high game and series to help lead the Bobcat boys’ bowling team to third place at the Iowa Alliance Conference’s North Division tournament on Thursday at Cadillac Lanes.
Waterloo East took the team title on its home lanes, rolling a 3,032 total to lead the five-team meet. Ames was second (2,947), followed by Marshalltown (2,855), Fort Dodge (2,692) and Mason City (2,455). The Bobcats’ total was its best of the season so far.
With only one non-strike during his second game, Cowan rolled a career-best 278 to lead the Bobcats with a 477. He rolled a 199-278-190 to lead Marshalltown with a 667 series, earning first-team all-conference honors by placing sixth.
His 278 game is tied for 14th best in all of Class 3A this winter.
Fellow sophomore Jayden Beichley brought in second-team all-conference honors after finishing seventh. He rolled consistently during individual play with his 215-209-208–632 series.
Porter Niedermann, also a sophomore, struggled out of the gate but bounced back in the third round with his high game, contributing a 134-182-234–550. He finished only 15 pins back of 12th place.
Carter McCready rolled 164-181-143–488, and Zach Morris added a 175-173-102–450. Not counting toward the final team tally, freshman Cayden Slifer charted a 149-149-139–437.
The Bobcats had a best Baker game of 224 and their five-Bakers total of 945 was second-best in their division behind only Waterloo East (996).
Rylie Marquart led the Trojans with a 739 series for meet medalist honors, followed by Trenton Beck of Fort Dodge (703) and Tyler Peterson of Waterloo East (678).
Des Moines Lincoln won a hotly contested Alliance South Division title with its 2,990 total, led by meet medalist Tayln Spaur (740).
Marshalltown returns to action with its 3A state qualifier on Tuesday at 9 a.m. at Wayward Social.
