SPORTS SHORTS: Crooks helps Cyclones control Cougars

HOUSTON — Audi Crooks scored a game-high 25 points and the Iowa State women’s basketball team used a dominant second quarter to take control of Wednesday’s eventual 76-64 victory over Houston in Big 12 Conference play.

Crooks shot 9-for-11 from the field and helped the Cyclones (15-10, 8-6) command a 53-28 advantage on the boards. Iowa State’s offense assisted on 23 of its 30 field goals to help the team overcome a whopping 18 turnovers.

Addy Brown had 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, Hannah Belanger added 11 points, and Emily Ryan had nine points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in the Cyclone win.

Laila Blair scored 19 points as the only double-digit scorer for Houston (13-13, 4-11).

DeVries leads Drake past Belmont

DES MOINES — Tucker DeVries had 21 points in Drake’s 84-69 win over Belmont on Wednesday night.

DeVries also contributed six rebounds for the Bulldogs (23-5, 14-3 Missouri Valley Conference). Atin Wright shot 7 for 11 (2 for 3 from 3-point range) and 2 of 3 from the free throw line to add 18 points. Kevin Overton had 16 points and was 5 of 7 shooting (4 for 6 from 3-point range).

The Bruins (16-12, 9-8) were led in scoring by Ja’Kobi Gillespie, who finished with 23 points and two steals. Belmont also got 12 points and 11 rebounds from Isaiah Walker. Malik Dia also had 12 points and six rebounds.

Drake took the lead with 16:50 left in the first half and did not relinquish it. The score was 46-36 at halftime, with DeVries racking up 14 points. Conor Enright scored a team-high nine points after halftime.

Illinois State knocks off Northern Iowa

NORMAL, Ill. — Johnny Kinziger scored 21 points to help Illinois State defeat Northern Iowa 81-73 on Wednesday night.

Kinziger shot 7 for 10 (3 for 5 from 3-point range) and 4 of 5 from the free throw line for the Redbirds (14-14, 8-9 Missouri Valley Conference). Myles Foster scored 18 points while shooting 6 of 12 from the field and 6 for 6 from the line, and added 14 rebounds. Kendall Lewis was 7 of 11 shooting (1 for 3 from 3-point range) to finish with 17 points, while adding 10 rebounds.

The Panthers (15-13, 9-8) were led by Nate Heise, who posted 20 points and two steals. Bowen Born added 14 points, four assists and three steals for Northern Iowa. Tytan Anderson also had 13 points, two steals and two blocks.

Illinois State took the lead with 1:26 to go in the first half and did not give it up. The score was 37-34 at halftime, with Kinziger racking up 11 points. Foster scored a team-high 10 points after intermission.
