NEWTON — The Marshalltown girls’ soccer team started the season with a 4-0 shutout victory over Newton on Monday night at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

The Bobcats got goals from Sara Huffman, Yuri Ramirez, McKenna Coleman and Carroll Gomez Reyes. Huffman scored the icebreaker on a penalty kick, and Lilyia Christen assisted on the goal by Ramirez to give Marshalltown a 2-0 halftime lead.

Esme Chavez Gomez made four saves in net for MHS to keep the clean sheet, while the Bobcats recorded 17 shot attempts in the victory.

MHS returns to action Thursday against Central Iowa United at West Marshall High School in State Center.
