IOWA CITY — Patrick McCaffery, son of Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery, has entered the transfer portal, the school confirmed Wednesday.

Patrick McCaffery has one year of eligibility remaining after starting 60 of 123 games in his career at Iowa. He was a starter for the first half of the 2023-24 season, averaged 8.9 points per game and scored a team-high 19 in the Hawkeyes’ loss at Utah in the NIT.

The 6-foot-9, 212-pound forward had thyroid cancer when he was 13 and, after two surgeries, was declared cancer-free three months after his diagnosis. He missed six games last season to address anxiety symptoms that caused him to lack sleep, appetite and energy.

McCaffery spent his first three years in the program with his older brother, Connor. Fran McCaffery, 64, said last month that he has no plans to retire.

“It’s been a great ride,” Fran said of Patrick’s career at Iowa. “He’s an awesome teammate, he’s an awesome player. … I’m just really proud of how he led this team and what he meant to the program for five years.”

Patrick joins Iowa senior guard Tony Perkins in the transfer portal. Perkins announced on Tuesday his intentions to depart.

Perkins is one of two Big Ten players this century to record at least 14 assists in multiple games.

“Tony has been a great Hawkeye the past four years, playing a key role on three NCAA Tournament teams and winning a Big Ten Tournament title,” Fran said. “Tony has aspirations of continuing his career professionally; we wish him the best moving forward.”
