SPORTS SHORTS: ISU women making fifth-straight trip to NCAA tourney

The Iowa State women’s basketball team will face Maryland on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Stanford, Calif.

Iowa State earned the No. 7 seed and Maryland (19-13) enters as the No. 10 seed. The winner will advance to face the winner of the No. 2-seed Stanford vs. No. 15 Norfolk State. The second round matchup would take place either Sunday or Monday.

The Cyclones (20-11) will play in their 22nd NCAA Tournament with all appearances coming under head coach Bill Fennelly. Iowa State has played in 15 of the last 17 NCAA Tournaments, while Maryland will be playing in its 14th straight.

Drake men draw Washington State in Omaha

The Drake men’s basketball team will play Washington State on Thursday at 9:05 p.m. in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Omaha, Neb., at CHI Health Center. The matchup will be televised live on TruTV.

The winner will play the winner of the No. 2 Iowa State-No. 15 South Dakota State contest in Saturday’s second round of the NCAA Tournament in Omaha.

Washington State (24-9) finished second in the Pac-12 with a conference mark of 14-6. The Cougars are ranked No. 22 nationally in the latest Associated Press poll. Former Bulldog guard Joseph Yesefu transferred to Washington State from Kansas.

The Bulldogs (28-6) earned a No. 10 seed in the East Region after winning the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Hawkeyes to host Kansas State in NIT first round

IOWA CITY — The third-seeded University of Iowa men’s basketball team will host No. 4 seed Kansas State in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament on Tuesday at 8 p.m. inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The game will be televised on ESPN.

The NIT appearance will be the ninth in program history and the first since the 2016-17 season for Iowa, who is 10-8 all-time in the NIT. The Hawkeyes finished as runners-up in 2013.

Iowa enters the NIT with an 18-14 overall record, finishing in a three-way tie for sixth place in the Big Ten Conference.

Kansas State enters the NIT with a 19-14 overall record. The Wildcats, who were 8-10 in Big 12 play, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament last week.
