SPORTS SHORTS: Marshalltown girls compete at Toreador quad

BOONE — Marshalltown girls track and field got their first outdoor experience of the season at Goeppinger Field in Boone for a quadrangular hosted by the Toreadors.

The Bobcats competed alongside Waukee Northwest, Newton and Boone, scoring 28 points to finish fourth out of the group.

MHS freshman Niah Lott had a pair of top finishes with a second-place showing in the long jump at 14 feet, 8 inches and a third-place run in the 100-meter dash in 13.81. Anessa Morrison added a third-place run in the 800, clocking in at 2:56.10.

The Bobcats are at Waukee Northwest on Tuesday.

East Marshall girls track 3rd at Union

LA PORTE CITY — East Marshall girls track and field finished third in the eight-team Gassman Invitational at Union Community High School on Thursday evening.

The Mustangs racked up 109.5 points to finish behind Union (183) and Vinton-Shellsburg (141) in the final standings. South Tama was fifth with 53.5 points and Gladbrook-Reinbeck scored 53 points for sixth.

Morgan Neuroth won the 400 hurdles and was part of the winning 4×800 relay team alongside Mallory Ostroski, Mylie Rasmusson and Sydney Hull. The Mustangs also claimed second in the shuttle hurdle and 4×400 relays.

The South Tama Trojans were led by a trio of second-place finishes for Alexis Thiessen in the long jump, Kayla Heck in the 800 and the distance medley relay.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Kennedy Brant won the high jump and the Rebels won three relays – the sprint medley, distance medley and 4×200.

South Tama boys runner-up at Gassman meet

LA PORTE CITY — South Tama County boys track and field won three events en route to a second-place finish at the Gassman Relays at Union Community High School in La Porte City on Thursday.

The Trojans scored 131.5 points, trailing only the hosting Knights with 186 points to top the team standings.

STC had 1-2 finishes in the 800 with Tommy Tyynismaa and Cade Rosenberger and in the 3,200 with James Brant and Barrett Jesina. The Trojans added wins in the 4×400 relay to end the night as well as Brant in the 400.

East Marshall finished fourth with 79.5 points. The shuttle hurdle and distance medley earned silver medals and Cael Curphy (400), Chandler Curtis (800) and Kaleb Grant (400 hurdles) reeled in bronze medals.

BCLUW boys 4th at home early bird

CONRAD — BCLUW boys track and field scored 92 points to claim fourth at the Comets’ early bird meet at BCLUW High School on Thursday evening.

The Comets scored 92 points. Jesup won with 122 points, followed by Wapsie Valley (117) and Iowa City West (114). GMG was eighth with 27 points, and North Tama and Gladbrook-Reinbeck were ninth with eight points and 10th with seven points, respectively.

BCLUW won two events – Owen Myers was first in the high jump and Cael Keller won the 400. Keller was also second in the long jump, one of seven events where BCLUW took silver on Thursday.

GMG was led by a pair of second-place finishes for Jabari Woodbury in the 200 and 400-meter dash events.

North Tama’s Clayton Williams and Gavin Rausch scored double points for the Redhawks in the long jump, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively.

Austin Vaverka steered Gladbrook-Reinbeck with a third-place time in the 100-meter dash.

Trojan girls win Perry track meet

PERRY — West Marshall girls track and field edged Woodward-Granger by a single point for the team title at a meet hosted by Perry on Thursday night.

The Trojans scored 155 points to Woodward-Granger’s 154. The Hawks closed the gap on the Trojans with a win in the 4×100 and a runner-up finish in the 4×400 but couldn’t catch West Marshall.

West Marshall won five events at the five-team meet; Audrey Girard won the 100 and 200-meter dashes, Abby Tollefson had the top time in the 100 hurdles, Kylee Schuler was the top jumper in the high jump and the shuttle hurdle relay squad of Amelia Ranson, Jenna Randall, Ella Wertz and Tollefson claimed gold.

Herron, Clark lead GC/G-R boys over A-P/D-NH

REINBECK — Freshman Treyvon Herron made a splash with two goals in a 3-1 season-opening victory for Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys soccer against Aplington-Parkersburg/Dike-New Hartford at Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School on Thursday night.

Hudson Clark added a tally and two assists for GC/G-R, last year’s state runner-up in Class 1A. Colin Gordon contributed one assist.

The teams were tied at 1-all at halftime.

A-P shuts out GC/G-R girls

APLINGTON — Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls soccer couldn’t get on the board in a 2-0 loss at Aplington-Parkersburg on Thursday night.

GC/G-R put 12 shots on goal but couldn’t get past Falcon keeper Emma Haan. Alex Yoder and Kali Aldrich led the way with four shots on goal each.

Jaden Hansen made seven saves with two goals allowed in 60 minutes of work in between the posts in goal and Meaghan Martens contributed 20 minutes with six saves.
