Willis, Neuroth named to IPSWA Class 2A all-state
DES MOINES — The North Iowa Cedar League’s West Division offered something to behold in every girls basketball game this season, whether it was from conference champion Grundy Center or cellar-dwellar East Marshall.
Eyes across the state took notice just the same.
Grundy Center senior forward Carlie Willis and East Marshall senior guard Morgan Neuroth were both named to the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association’s All-State teams in Class 2A at Saturday’s annual meeting inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
In leading Grundy Center’s turnaround season all the way to the state tournament, Willis was voted to the IPSWA’s all-state second team, while Neuroth earned her second all-state selection, this time as a third-teamer.
Willis averaged team-highs of 13.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game this season, finishing her basketball career with an 18-point, 10-rebound performance in the Spartans’ 2A state quarterfinal loss to Panorama.
A St. Cloud State volleyball recruit, Willis helped Grundy Center reverse course on last year’s 11-11 record as the Spartans scored a 21-3 campaign that advanced all the way to the Well.
Willis ranked 10th in 2A this season by averaging 4.2 offensive rebounds per game.
Neuroth’s career reluctantly didn’t include any NICL West Division wins, but her achievements on the court were recognized just the same. The East Marshall senior scored 1,340 points in her career, leading the Mustangs in scoring all four seasons and rebounding in three.
Neuroth ranked 26th in 2A at 16.3 points per game and earned third-team all-state honors a year after achieving second-team notoriety. She also ranked 17th in 2A by shooting 77.9 percent from the free-throw line, going 81-of-104 for the season.
A DMACC softball signee, Neuroth scored 50.5 percent of East Marshall’s points this season.
Callie Levin of Solon was named Miss Iowa Basketball in a vote of statewide media and coaches. The 5-foot-9 guard led the Spartans to a 3A state championship, averaging 22.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.8 steals per game as Solon scored its first state basketball title since 1998.
The University of Iowa commit finished her career with 1,984 points, 535 rebounds, 412 assists and 417 steals.
