Bobcats pummel Polar Bears

T-R PHOTO BY JAKE RYDER - Lily Zahnd, center, makes an overhand smash at the net as her No. 1 doubles partner Halie Hohnstein, right, looks on during Thursday’s dual meet against Des Moines North at the Marshalltown Court Compex. Zahnd and Hohnstein helped the Bobcats sweep aside the Polar Bears for an 11-0 victory.

Marshalltown girls and boys tennis dominated the courts at the MHS Tennis Complex with matching 11-0 victories over Des Moines North on Thursday evening.

All matches were won in straight sets as the Bobcats were able to rearrange their lineups to allow some different faces to get some varsity experience.

Sebastian Vaca Vaca-Diez, Cory Smith, Rogelio Ceren, Ethen Santana and Jay Helton all saw their first taste of varsity action for the boys as part of senior night.

“This senior group has won 49 of 60 regular-season matches and they’ve all played a part,” MHS boys head coach James Christensen said. “Some of these guys have been there for a lot of these wins like Jacob Thiessen but all of these guys show up in practice. And [manager] Meredith Kodis who does all the stats and live scores for everybody, we’ll definitely miss her after this year. These seniors have been great leaders for us and they keep the energy up.”

Isaac Benscoter won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and teamed up with Thiessen for a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. The Bobcats didn’t lose more than three games in a set all night.

Christensen said MHS was ready to get back on the court and lock down a win after Tuesday’s narrow 6-5 loss to Roosevelt.

The Bobcats were also looking for some momentum going into a tough start to next week, heading to 1A No. 3 Pella on Monday, then coming home against 2A No. 5 Mason City on Tuesday.

“We’re hoping to have a good practice on Friday and figure out a couple things,” Christensen said. “We’re still working on some things from Tuesday — we need to continue to figure out how to play in those deuce situations and tiebreakers and look at our doubles strategies. And if we can do those and execute, we’ll be alright.”

The MHS girls were even more dominant, dropping a total of six games across all 11 matches with North on Thursday to improve to 9-0 this season.

Rebekah Downs defeated Blu Atha Abbott, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and Kennedy Feldman was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 2 singles against Selena Cruz.

Lily Zahnd and Halie Hohnstein bumped up to No. 1 doubles to defeat Abbott and Cruz, 6-0, 6-1.

“We had three girls play tonight that hadn’t played varsity and so they’ll earn a letter now which is great for them,” MHS girls head coach John Fiscus said.

The Bobcats travel to Mason City on Tuesday.
