Henson’s 70 helps MHS girls to 3rd at Lamson

WEST DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls’ golf team got the four scores it needed to notch a third-place finish at the Lamson Invite on a breezy Monday at Willow Creek Golf Course.

Bobcat junior Natalie Henson had the low round of the day, leading the field in the 17-team West Des Moines Valley tournament with a medalist round of 3-under-par 73. Henson’s round included an eagle three on the par-5 18th, two birdies and just one bogey despite the windy conditions.

“Natalie got off to a fantastic start, going 3-under on her first seven holes, including an eagle on the

par-5 18th hole,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “The winds started to pick up as the day went on, but she did a great job controlling her shots and adjusting to the conditions.”

Marshalltown finished in with a 357 team score, just one stroke back of runner-up Indianola (356). Ames ran away with the team title after shooting a 335.

Gaby Estabrook contributed the next best score for the Bobcats, finishing 15th overall with her round of 87. Harper Wilson finished in with a 92, which ranked her 30th, and Hallie Kuhlers came through with a 108 to keep the Bobcats in the top three.

“Team-wise, we know we’re only going to be as good as our fourth counting score,” said Johnson. “It was great to see Hallie Kuhlers shoot her lowest round as a Bobcat and come in as that fourth counter.

“To come out with a top-three finish against that many high-quality schools from around the state is a sign that we can compete when we have everyone playing well.”

The Bobcats are scheduled to play an Iowa Alliance Conference dual meet today against Waterloo East at Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo.
