Pella pummels MHS boys tennis to remain perfect

PELLA — Marshalltown boys’ tennis coach James Christensen gave Pella its due, all while expecting more from his Bobcats.

The host Little Dutch remained undefeated by bouncing the Bobcats 10-1 in Monday’s non-conference dual meet.

Pella (14-0), ranked third in Class 1A by the Iowa High School Boys Tennis Coaches, earned a split in the series after falling to Marshalltown last spring, 7-4.

On Monday, however, the Dutch delivered seven straight-set wins and won three of the four matches that made it into third-set super-tiebreakers.

“Pella played really well, have to hand it to them,” Christensen said. “From positions three through 10, we just didn’t have our ‘A’ game today, mentally or physically.”

The Little Dutch swept singles play to put the dual away at the midway point. Marshalltown’s best chances came from Nos. 4 and 6 singles players Carson Snyder and Adam Boone. Snyder suffered a 6-0 loss in the first set against Nile Roozeboom, but battled back to nearly force a third set. Snyder fell 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) in the first truly contested match of the dual.

Jacob Christen lost 6-4, 6-2 to Ben Van Gorp at No. 5 singles, and Boone took the first set in an eventual 6-7, 7-6, (10-6) loss.

Pella’s top two players — Jack Briggs and Joshua Roozeboom — brought their ‘A’ games to the dual, according to Christensen. Briggs beat Isaac Benscoter 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Roozeboom topped Jacob Thiessen 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.

Briggs and Roozeboom are the reigning 1A state doubles champions.

“They are the real deal,” Christensen said.

The state’s top duo didn’t even play doubles together in Monday’s win over the Bobcats.

Marshalltown’s lone win of the match came at No. 4 doubles, where Isaac Seberger and Tayven Dutton teamed up for a 6-2, 2-6, (12-10) victory over Brodie Ferrell and Maddox Jones.

It was one of three doubles bouts to go three sets, but the only Bobcat victory of the bunch. Synder and Boone fell 6-3, 2-6, (10-6) at No. 3 doubles, while Kyle Smith and Will Swartz were defeated 5-7, 6-1, (10-4) at No. 5.

“We had really been making progress on our pressure situations, but I feel we regressed today a bit,” Christensen said.

The Bobcats (8-6) close out the regular season with Tuesday’s home dual against 2A No. 5 Mason City.
