SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat girls soccer silences Scarlets

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls soccer team dominated the offensive pace of play in a 3-0 shutout of Des Moines East on Tuesday at Duke Williams Stadium.

The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead into halftime after an early own goal by the Scarlets, followed by an unassisted goal for Gissel Hernandez Ibarra in the 16th minute. Geselle Rivera provided some insurance in the second half on a goal assisted by Irais Buenrostro in the 65th minute.

MHS had 22 shots to just six for East, with Esme Chavez making three saves toward her third shutout of the season in-between the posts.

Marshalltown returns home for the start of a six-game homestand on Thursday, taking on Des Moines Hoover.

Henson medals, MHS golf rips Riverhawks

Marshalltown girls golf cruised to a 189-227 victory over Mason City at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown on Tuesday.

The Bobcats also hoarded the individual awards, with Natalie Henson turning in a 2-over-par 37 for medalist and Gaby Estabrook turning in a 44 for runner-up medalist.

Harper Wilson and Emma Clawson rounded out team scoring with matching 50s on their scorecards.

Henson made par, save for two bogeys on No. 5 and No. 9. Estabrook closed out her round with a birdie on the par-4 No. 9.

MHS returns to action Thursday at the 18-hole Linda Bloom Invite, teeing off at 10 a.m. at the American Legion Memorial Course.
