SPORTS SHORTS: Pfantz medals at A-P tourney

PARKERSBURG — West Marshall senior Allie Pfantz carded a 39 to win an individual medal by three strokes at an Aplington-Parkersburg tournament at Legend Trail Golf Course in Parkersburg on Tuesday.

The Trojans were third with a 193 team score. Grundy Center claimed the team title with a 185 team score, paced by runner-up medalist Leah Larson with a 42. North Tama was fourth with a 214 team score.

Rounding out the Spartan scoring was Avery Knutsen with a 43, Ashlyn Kuiper with a 49 and Holly Lubbert at 51.

West Marshall’s other scorers were Rachel Randall and Avery Stanley with 50s and Natalie Nichols shooting a 54.

Kylie Calderwood had the low round for the Redhawks with a 48; Kinsley Even contributed a 50, Brooke Bradley and Danika Wrage each shot a 58.

Comet track teams 3rd at Madrid co-ed

MADRID — BCLUW girls and boys track field each finished third in their respective division as part of the Ron Hamel Co-Ed Relays at Tiger Stadium in Madrid on Tuesday.

The Comet girl scored 106 points to finish behind Van Meter (160) and Madrid (108) in the team standings.

The 4×800 quartet of Mallori Jones, Raegan Crawford, Kalia Stover and Miranda Jones won the event in 10:31.16, 24 seconds ahead of Martensdale-St. Marys in second.

Mallori Jones added a win in the high jump, winning a tiebreaker after clearing 4 feet, 8 inches.

For the BCLUW boys, the distance medley claimed gold in a new Madrid meet record of 3:49.83, with Alex Paxson, Carter Gallentine, Kevin Hill and Cayden White on the winning quartet.

Cael Keller added a win in the 400 in 52.67 seconds.

The Comet boys finished with 91.5 points, trailing Madrid (185) and Earlham (110).

Mustang boys sixth at EBF Relays

EDDYVILLE — East Marshall boys track and field scored 66 points to finish sixth out of seven teams in the Class A Division at the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Boys Relays on Tuesday.

Kaden Good won the long jump with a best leap of 18 feet, 11 inches.

Blake Neuroth added a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, and was part of the runner-up shuttle hurdle team along with Jacob Farrington, Carter Lavender and Cale Hungerford. Farrington, Lavender, Carter Pohle and Kaleb Grant were also second in the sprint medley relay.

Pella Christian won the Class A division with 126 points, just ahead of Davis County with 120 points.

Spartan tennis tags Tigers

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center boys tennis cruised to an 8-1 victory over South Hardin on Tuesday at the Wilhelm Sports Complex in Grundy Center.

Tanner Laube, currently ranked No. 9 in Class 1A, won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Elias Cakerice and Michael Lang also won their singles matches.

Laube and Remington Tack were 6-1, 6-3 winners at No. 1 doubles and Kael Edwarrds and Lincoln Lewis won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Weaver’s medalist round elevates East Marshall

Cody Weaver shot an even-par 36 to earn medalist honors, leading the East Marshall boys’ golf team to a triangular victory on Tuesday at Wandering Creek Golf Course.

The Mustangs shot a 191 team total to defeat Gladbrook-Reinbeck (200) and Colfax-Mingo (207).

Jackson Bidwell added the third-best round of the day, carding a 48 for East Marshall, while Cade Burchland (52) and Kael Koch (55) also contributed counting scores for the Mustangs.

Brayden Utter shot a 49 to lead G-R, followed by Austen Mathern (50), Michael Boyd (50) and Austin Gehring (51).

Cael Bracewell led Colfax-Mingo with a 47, earning runner-up medalist honors.

The East Marshall girls won their side of the triangular as well, shooting 235 to hold off the Tigerhawks (238) and the Rebels (245).

Delaney Ryan shot 54 for runner-up medalist honors for the Mustangs. Riley Anderson (58), Sara Weitzell (61) and Clara Crouse (62) also contributed for East Marshall.

Mallory Wrage (58), Stella Heinzel (60), Nattalee Brinkman (62) and Piper Evans (65) scored for Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

Bobcat boys race to 6th place at Mason City

MASON CITY — The Marshalltown boys’ track and field team crowned a pair of champions on its way to sixth place out of eight teams at the Mason City Invite on Monday night.

James Johnson won the 1,600-meter run and John Moellers led a 1-2 Bobcat finish in the 3,200 to account for a bundle of Marshalltown’s 76 team points.

Waterloo West won the meet with 125.5 points, followed closely by Decorah (124.5) and Algona (123). Forest City (111), Algona (109), Marshalltown, Fort Dodge (60) and Waterloo East (12) filled out the field.

Johnson won the mile run in a season-best time of 4 minutes, 35.25 seconds, while teammate Carter Nunn took seventh in his best time of 4:56.01.

Moellers (10:05.79) and Preston Johnson (10:06.95) finished 1-2 in the 3,200.

Two Bobcat relays placed third in their respective races. The 4×800 foursome of Nunn, James Johnson, Parker Gooding and Gatleel Joar finished in 8:46.18; the distance medley foursome of Aiden Smitherman, LaMar Johnson, Isaac Ceniceros and Preston Johnson combined for a time of 4:02.21.

Jirovsky medals, Spartans settle for second

The Grundy Center boys’ golf team settled for second place after the fifth-score tiebreaker awarded Waverly-Shell Rock the team title on Monday at the Aplington-Parkersburg Invitational.

Both Grundy Center and W-SR shot 331 on a windy day across two courses in Butler County. Judd Jirovsky scored medalist honors for the Spartans after shooting a 1-under-par 71, playing the first nine holes at Legend Trail Golf Club in Parkersburg and then nine more at Aplington Recreation Complex.

Preston Martens finished in with an 81 for sixth place, Sullivan Dirks carded an 89 and Jaxon Kiewiet shot 90 to bring the Spartans to their 331 total. Eli Wegmann’s 93, however, was one stroke behind Waverly-Shell Rock’s fifth score — Hudson Kroymann’s 92.

Luke Frazell shot 76 for runner-up honors to lead Waverly-Shell Rock to the team title.

East Marshall placed eighth in the 13-team tournament, led by Cody Weaver’s ninth-place finish after a round of 82. Jackson Bidwell finished with a 91, while Wyatt Stalzer (100) and Austin Crandon (110) closed out the Mustangs’ scoring.

West Marshall placed 11th in the team standings with a 391. The Trojans’ individual scores were not available as of press time.

Comet girls just keep winning, top Bulldogs

HAMPTON — The BCLUW girls’ golf team remained unbeaten this season with a 212-228 win over Hampton-Dumont-CAL in Monday’s dual meet at Hampton Country Club.

Sydney Anderson shot a 48 to claim medalist honors for the Comets, and Lindsay Beeghly made it a BCLUW sweep with her 52 for the runner-up spot. Delaney Legg (55) and Marissa Schnathorst (57) closed out the Comets’ scoring.

Kenzie Moorehead led H-D-C with a 54.
