BCLUW, Beeghly in contention in 1A golf

The BCLUW girls golf team finished third in the first day of the Class 1A state meet at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown on Thursday.

The Comets shot a 371 and are only eight shots back of leaders Easton Valley. Highland is currently second at 367.

BCLUW’s Lindsay Beeghly also has the individual leader in her sights, currently third after shooting a 78. New London’s Taylor Phillips went to the clubhouse with the lead after carding a 73.

Sydney Anderson (90), Gracie Andrews (101) and Marissa Schnathorst (102) provided the other counting scores for BCLUW on Thursday. Leah McEwen and Delaney Legg chipped in 105 and 106, respectively.

The meet tees off at 9 a.m. on Friday with a shotgun start to beat expected inclement weather later in the day.

Trojans, Spartans have work to do in 2A

BOONE — West Marshall and Grundy Center girls golf will look to make a day-two climb after finishing eighth and ninth in a tough 2A field at the first day of the state meet at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone.

The Trojans shot a 390 in eighth, four strokes ahead of Grundy Center in ninth in the 10-team field.

Allie Pfantz led West Marshall with an 84. Avery Stanley (100), Rachel Randall (103) and Sienna Edler (103) had the other counting scores for the Trojans; Riley Randall and Natalie Nichols came in at 106 and 112.

The Spartans were led by Avery Knutsen shooting a 96. Isabelle Ruth added a 97 and Holly Lubbert and Leah Larson rounded out scoring at 100 and 101. Ashlyn Kuiper and Kahlynn Draper shot 103 and 110 as non-counting scores for Grundy Center.

Sumner-Fredericksburg currently leads both chases for state championship hardware, two strokes ahead of Roland-Story in the team race with a first day total of 337, paced by Chloe Bolte who shot a five-under-par 67 to take a commanding 10-shot lead in the individual leaderboard.
