ANKENY — The idea is to be playing your best golf at the end of the season.

Mission: accomplished.

The Marshalltown girls’ golf team shot its lowest round of the spring on the final day of the Class 4A state meet on Friday at Otter Creek Golf Course, settling for 10th place out of as many teams.

Bobcat junior Natalie Henson finished with an all-state medal in fourth place individually, adding to her ninth-place finish from a year ago by shooting a 1-over-par round that couldn’t gain ground on the frontrunners.

Henson chopped three strokes off her opening round, going 73-70–143 on Friday, but she finished one stroke back of third place. Linn-Mar’s Morgan Rupp won the title with a 5-under 137 (70-67), while Isabella Pettersen of Iowa City Liberty (70-70–140) and Saleah Vivanh Vong of Des Moines East/North (71-71–142) rounded out the top three.

Lauren Briggs of Burlington shot a 2-under 69 on Friday to fight back into a tie at 143 with Henson, who claimed fourth place on a cardback.

Marshalltown junior Gaby Estabrook played her final nine holes of the season (the front nine) at even par, shooting 36-44–80 to finish 30th overall with a 163 total. Harper Wilson (88-88–176) and Hallie Kuhlers (113-103–216) contributed the final scoring rounds for Friday.

Kuhlers’ 103 on Friday was her career-low round.

Emma Clawson (110-114–224) contributed the Bobcats’ fourth scoring round of Thursday’s opening 18 holes. Hanna Osgood (125-116–241) cut nine strokes off her round on the second day.

Marshalltown shot 354-341–695 to finish in 10th, but the Bobcats return the entire starting lineup plus alternate Kenedy Lammert for next season. Kuhlers and Lammert are juniors, Wilson is a sophomore, and Clawson and Osgood are freshmen.

“Great round to end an outstanding season for this squad that loses zero players to graduation,” MHS head coach Lucas Johnson wrote on the team’s social media account on X.

Pleasant Valley claimed the team title with a 627 total, followed by Waukee Northwest and Cedar Rapids Washington at 634. Ames, also of the Iowa Alliance Conference, scored sixth (660).

Trojans, Spartans in 2A

BOONE — Chloe Bolte-led Sumner-Fredericksburg claimed the Class 2A girls’ state golf title, totaling 674 to hold off Roland-Story (679) on Friday at Cedar Pointe Golf Course.

Bolte, a Missouri State commit, shot 67-71–138 for a round of 6-under-par. It gave her a 19-stroke edge over the second-place score of 157 by New Hampton’s Lauren Nuss.

West Marshall senior Allie Pfantz shot 84-80–164 to place eighth overall. Pfantz gained four spots in the final standings by shaving four strokes off her second 18 holes.

The Trojans came in with eighth place, shooting 390-380–770 with the same four girls scoring on both days. In support of Pfantz, West Marshall’s contributing scores came from Rachel Randall (103-97–200), Avery Stanley (100-100–200) and Sierra Edler (103-103–206).

Grundy Center finished 10th out of as many teams, shooting 394-402–796. Avery Knutsen led the Spartans on both days, shooting 96-98–194. Holly Lubbert (100-99–199), Isabelle Ruth (97-104–201) and Leah Larson (101-101–202) rounded out the Spartans’ scoring.
