MHS girls maneuver around East, Gates Park

WATERLOO — The Marshalltown girls’ golf team maneuvered its way around the front nine at Gates Park Golf Course plenty well in its first visit during Iowa Alliance Conference play.

The Bobcats charted a season-best team score to hammer host Waterloo East, 177-287, in Tuesday’s conference dual meet, led by medalist Natalie Henson and runner-up Gaby Estabrook.

“Conditions weren’t great with a steady ran and the threat of storms throughout the nine holes,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “With the new Alliance Conference, this was the first time we’d seen Gates Park and our girls played really well given the circumstances.”

Henson had an eagle-3 on the par-5 sixth hole at Gates Park to highlight the day, chipping in to drop her below par for the time being. Bogeys on the final two holes brought Henson’s medalist round to an even-par 36 to lead all scorers.

Gaby Estabrook’s round included two bogeys, a double bogey and the rest pars as she shot 40. Harper Wilson helped out with a 46 and Emma Clawson completed the team scoring with her 55.

“Gaby Estabrook showed a lot of great touch around the greens and hit some great shots around the mature trees of Gates Park to have one of her better rounds of the season,” Johnson said.

Hallie Kuhlers (57), Kenedy Lammert (61) and Hanna Osgood (63) also participated in the meet for MHS, which improved to 3-1 in dual meets this season.

Next up for the MHS golfers is Thursday’s Southeast Polk Invite at Copper Creek Golf Club in Pleasant Hill.
