SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys soccer bows out to No. 2 Dowling

WEST DES MOINES — Kevin Copic and Enrico Sartori-Fernandes scored two goals apiece as Class 4A No. 2 Dowling Catholic eliminated the Marshalltown boys’ soccer team 5-0 in Monday’s substate semifinals.

The Maroons (16-2) led 3-0 at the half and added a pair of tallies after the intermission, including an own goal. Josiah Crowder had two assists for Dowling, while Hudson Porter had three saves in net for the win.

No statistics for Marshalltown were available as of press time. The Bobcats finished the spring season with a 6-11 record.

Redhawks rattle off win over Spartans

COLLINS — The North Tama baseball team improved to 4-1 with a win in its Iowa Star Conference South Division opener, beating Collins-Maxwell 11-4 on Monday.

The Redhawks used a pair of four-run innings to take command, taking an 8-3 lead into the fifth.

Kayler Morris finished 3-for-5 with a triple, five RBIs and two runs scored to lead the North Tama offense. The Redhawks had just three other hits while benefitting from seven walks and three hit by pitches.

Tyler Popelka pitched 5 2/3 innings for the win, allowing four hits and three runs — two earned — with two walks and seven strikeouts. Josh Dostal struck out two in recording the final four outs.

Wolverines overtake Bolts for conference triumph

BAXTER — The GMG baseball team used a five-run top of the seventh to rally past Baxter for an 11-7 win in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division opener.

The Wolverines (2-2) trailed 7-6 entering their last at-bat before overtaking the Bolts. Rider Kupka kept Baxter (2-2) off the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win.

Kaleb Gill was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the GMG bats. Colin Teske was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Kupka went 2-for-3 with a double, three runs and three RBIs. Drayson Stephenson went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Ethan Klemsrud drove in two runs.

Grady Dieleman pitched five innings in a no decision, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks, striking out two. Kupka gave up a run in his two innings of relief.

Greenwood’s no-no propels Trojans past Roland-Story

STATE CENTER — Aubree Greenwood struck out 11 in a season-opening no-hitter, helping the West Marshall softball team take down Roland-Story 3-0 in Monday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.

Greenwood walked two and the Trojan defense played error-free behind her. West Marshall took the lead for good with one run in the fourth and added two in the fifth.

Jillian Karsjen had an RBI single, while Rachel Randall and Lily Zahnd both singled and scored. Josie deNeui also drove in a run.

No. 10 Collins-Maxwell takes down Redhawks, 4-0

COLLINS — Erica Houge tossed a two-hitter and Class 1A No. 10 Collins-Maxwell handled the North Tama softball team 4-0 in Monday’s season-opening contest.

Houge struck out 16, walked one and hit one batter in the complete-game victory. She also doubled home a run and scored for the Spartans.

Gabrielle Seda and Adelyn Sienknecht both had singles for the Redhawks. Sienknecht took the loss in the circle, allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four.

West Marshall wins Trojan showdown at Pleasantville

STATE CENTER — The Class 2A No. 2 West Marshall baseball team scored four times in the top of the fourth to rally from a three-run deficit for a 4-3 victory over No. 5 Pleasantville on Monday night.

Grayson Shaver pitched all seven innings for West Marshall, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out 12. After surrendering three runs in the bottom of the first, Shaver got the final 18 outs without allowing a hit.

Noah DeSotel went 2-for-3 with a double and a run, while Caden Pfantz was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Owen Siegert and Dawson Bear both had a hit and an RBI with Bear scoring once.

STC softball swept by Stormin’ Pointers in league play

CENTER POINT — The South Tama softball team was swept by Center Point-Urbana in Monday’s season-opening doubleheader, falling 10-0 and 14-1.

Center Point-Urbana led 2-0 in the first game before scoring eight times in the home half of the fifth inning to end it early.

Millie Mathes-Henle had both hits for the Trojans. Layla Pansegrau allowed eight hits from the circle, giving up six earned runs with five walks and five hit batters.

The Stormin’ Pointers put up a 10-spot in the first inning of game two, ending the nightcap after three innings.

Abigail Chyma, Mathes-Henle and Pansegrau each hit a double, with Pansegrau scoring the Trojans’ lone run on Mathes-Henle’s hit. Delayna Bear took the loss in the circle, allowing nine earned runs on eight hits, four walks and four hit batters.

Shively strong in Mustangs’ season-opening victory

EDDYVILLE — The East Marshall baseball team kicked off its season with a 4-0 win over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont last Wednesday night.

Joryn Shively pitched a one-hitter for the Mustangs, allowing three walks and hitting two batters while striking out nine.

Blake Neuroth went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, while Xavier Slifer doubled and scored. Kaleb Grant was 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs, and Carter Lavender added a single.
