SPORTS SHORTS: Grundy Center sweeps NICL track titles

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center track and field claimed the girls and boys team titles at Monday’s North Iowa Cedar League Super Meet held at Spartan Stadium.

The girls scored 117 points, just ahead of runner-up Union with 105. The Spartan boys were the only team in triple digits at 143; Oelwein and Union scored 86 and 83 for second and third, respectively.

Grundy Center’s girls 4×800 relay set a new NICL meet record; Laney Dole, Ellery Luhring, Karlee Lynch and Grace Storjohann ran 9:46.12 to set the new mark. Luhring was also the champion in the open 400 in 1:01.65 and Allison Koch won the high jump after winning a tiebreaker with teammate Carlie Willis when both cleared 5 feet, 2 inches.

East Marshall’s Morgan Neuroth was the other area conference title winner, finishing the 400 hurdles in 1:08.24. The Mustangs were 12th as a team with 27 points.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s girls finished 14th with 15 points; their sprint medley quartet of Dylan Mathern, Blake Mathern, Elly Sieh and Kennedy Brant led the way with a third-place finish.

The Spartan boys also set a new school record as Devin Hinders, Grant Newton, Brody Zinkula and Brayden Davie won the 4×200 relay in 1:31.42. Zinkula and Davie were also on the winning 4×400 relay team along with Brayden Wallis and Tate Jirovsky; Justin Knaack, Zinkula, Judd Jirovsky and Kaden Lynch won the distance medley relay. Tate Jirovsky was the Grundy boys’ lone individual champ, claiming gold in the open 400.

East Marshall’s boys were 13th with 18 points. The Mustangs had a pair of fourth-place finishes with Kaleb Grant in the 800 and Jacob Farrington, Carter Lavender, Blake Neuroth and Cale Hungerford placing fourth in the shuttle hurdle.

West Marshall girls win in Nevada

NEVADA — West Marshall girls track and field won the team title at a Nevada meet on Monday in the final stop before Thursday’s state-qualifying meets.

The Trojans scored 116 points, Ogden was runner-up with 104 points. BCLUW finished fourth with 92 points.

Audrey Girard won the 200-meter dash as the sole champion for the Trojans on Monday. West Marshall was also second in six events: Abby Tollefson in the 100 hurdles, Addie Thompson in the 1,500 and 3,000, and the shuttle hurdle, 4×400 and 4×800 relays.

BCLUW won three events — Raegan Crawford in the 800, Kalia Stover in the 3,000 and the distance medley relay quartet of Brinna Benson, Grace Farnsworth, Mallori Jones and Miranda Jones.
