Marshalltown High School senior Caleb Kusserow has been named the 2024 recipient of the first-ever Al and Donna Hoop Memorial Scholarship.
The memorial is a $1,000 award that was given annually to a Bobcat baseball player by longtime coach and program supporter Al Hoop, who passed away this past March.
Coach Hoop, who grew up in Marshalltown and graduated from MHS, was personally involved with the Bobcat baseball program for over 25 years. The award, which now bears his name as well, has been presented to a Bobcat baseball player since 2016.
Caleb has been a member of the MHS varsity baseball team for the past five seasons. In the fall, Caleb plans to enroll at the University of Iowa where he will major in nursing and radiology. While he's in school, Caleb plans on working at the Stead Family Children's Hospital.
Bobcat head coach Colton Hanke praised Kusserow's accomplishments this season.
"Caleb's versatility has been critical for us this season," he said. "His willingness to play a variety of positions is something I know Coach Hoop would have appreciated."
Caleb is the son of Lindsay and Kyle Kusserow of Marshalltown.
