Bobcat softball bows out against sixth-ranked Ankeny Centennial

ANKENY — Ankeny Centennial freshman Lauren Sandholm struck out 13 in a one-hit shutout, powering the sixth-ranked Jaguars past the Marshalltown softball team 10-0 in five innings in Saturday’s Class 5A Region 4 semifinal.

Sandholm struck out six and five Bobcats consecutively, facing only two batters more than the minimum, as Ankeny Centennial (29-9) advanced to Tuesday’s regional final against No. 13 Waukee (19-17).

Freshman Kate Sandvick was the lone Marshalltown batter to reach base, as she worked a one-out walk in the top of the first inning and doubled to right field to lead off the fourth.

MHS junior pitcher Karsyn Price surrendered nine earned runs on 12 hits, two walks and three hit batters in the season-ending loss for the Bobcats.

Half of Centennial’s 12 hits went for extra bases, highlighted by Jordyn Kennedy’s three-run home run in the bottom of the second.

Kennedy finished 2-for-4 with a double, a dinger and four RBIs, grounding out to plate the game-ending run in the fifth. Addi Starr, Maddy Ott and McKenna Vallejo each added two hits for the Jaguars.

Second-year Marshalltown head coach Jason Bowers graduates no seniors from the season-ending roster after leading the program to its best record (16-24) since 2013.

Starting at $4.38/week.
