Bobcats’ Stupp slugs her way onto Alliance first team
The best season in Marshalltown High School softball since 2013 resulted in 16 wins and five players honored on the Iowa Alliance Conference’s all-North Division teams.
Bobcat freshman Emma Stupp was voted first-team all-Alliance North at first base, becoming Marshalltown’s first first-team all-conference selection since 2020.
Freshman Kate Sandvick and sophomore Gianna Baune both were voted to the second team, while sisters Laney and Briley Danielson were chosen as honorable mention.
Marshalltown finished fourth in the competition-rich Alliance North, going 5-11 in divisional play behind Ames (14-2), Fort Dodge (13-3) and Mason City (7-9) with Waterloo East (1-15) coming in fifth.
Stupp, a second-team honoree in last year’s inaugural season of the Alliance, finished 11th in all of Class 5A with 10 home runs and eighth with 47 RBIs. She led all players in the IAC North in both statistics, as well as batting average (.449) and slugging percentage (.847). She was second in on-base percentage (.530).
She’s the first Bobcat to gain first-team honors since Madison Finch and Erica Johnson five seasons ago.
Baune was voted second-team outfielder after batting .336 with 42 hits, three doubles and team-highs of three triples and 40 runs scored. She was second on the team with 21 stolen bases, ranking fifth in the IAC North, and added five outfield assists from her center field spot.
Sandvick, Marshalltown’s starting shortstop, batted .403 to rank fifth among all North Division players and was third in the league with 62 defensive assists. She struck out just once in 72 at-bats was second on the team with a .457 on-base percentage.
Laney, a junior, and Briley, a freshman, both gained their second honorable mention selections. Laney batted .316 with a team-leading 10 doubles to go with one triple, two home runs and 21 RBIs. She scored 34 runs and stole a team-leading 22 bases, which ranked fourth in the IAC North.
Briley finished with an 8-8 record in the pitching circle with a 5.04 earned run average and 51 strikeouts in 90 1/3 innings. Offensively she batted .299 with nine doubles, a triple, two home runs and 33 RBIs.
