SPORTS SHORTS: Comet softball bows out to Clarksville

CLARKSVILLE — BCLUW softball couldn’t hold on to an early lead against Clarksville in a 5-4 win for the Indians at Clarksville High School on Friday.

Clarksville, ranked 13th in Class 1A, advanced to the 1A Region 4 final against seventh-ranked Southeast Warren; BCLUW’s season ended at 15-17 overall.

BCLUW led 3-1 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Clarksville tied the game on a Hannah Wangsness two-run home run and added two more runs on an RBI single and a two-out infield error.

The Comets got a run back in the next half-inning on a run scored via one of five Clarksville errors on Friday, but BCLUW only had one baserunner the rest of the way.

Raegan Crawford was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double for the Comets and Morgan Bergman, Allie Ward and Cassie Nason all had an RBI each.

Klayre Gallentine allowed three earned runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout in the circle for BCLUW.

Marrisa Grant, Maliah Gunderson and Callie Swanson played their final games for BCLUW on Friday as the three seniors on the Comets roster.

Warhawks rally past Spartan softball

CLARKSVILLE — West Fork scored all six of its runs in the final inning of a 6-5 comeback victory over Grundy Center in a 2A Region 6 semifinal at Clarksville High School on Friday.

The Spartans’ unlikely run through the postseason ends at 12-18 overall after knocking off a second-ranked Alburnett team on Wednesday. West Fork advances to face Hudson in the regional final on Monday.

Grundy Center seemed well on its way again on Friday, with a two-RBI single from Evelyn Geerdes and a wild pitch scoring Lauren Zajac in the second inning for a quick 3-0 Spartan lead. They added two more runs in the third inning on an RBI single for Camdyn Aronson and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch drawn by Allison Koch that scored Blessing Edittu.

West Fork threatened often throughout the game, but didn’t break through until the top of the seventh where a two-out, two-run single completed the Warhawks’ rally.

The Spartans had a chance to respond in the bottom of the seventh but went down in order to end the game.

It was the final game for Grundy Center seniors Blessing Edittu, Lucy Lebo and Carlie Willis.

Starting at $4.38/week.
