Marshalltown Community College announced the appointment of Callie Dutton to head softball coach.

Dutton comes to MCC with a wealth of experience, having played and coached at various institutions. A former standout athlete, Dutton began her collegiate softball career at Beloit College, where she was named the Freshman Athlete of the Year during the 2018-2019 season.

She then transferred to the University of Dubuque her sophomore year, eventually playing a crucial role in helping to lead the team to a conference title in her senior season while earning a spot on the all-conference second team.

“My time as a player was incredibly formative, and I want to create similar memorable experiences for the girls here at MCC,” said Dutton. “College sports can be transformative, and I am committed to building a program that not only competes at a high level but also fosters a positive, team-oriented culture.”

Following her playing career, Dutton transitioned into coaching, where she quickly made an impact. She served as a graduate assistant at the University of Dubuque from August to December 2022, followed by a stint as a volunteer assistant coach at Park University from December 2022 to May 2023. Most recently, Dutton was an assistant coach at Simpson College from June 2023 to August 2024.

MCC will be her first head coaching position, and she is anxious to start.

“I accepted the position at MCC because of the welcoming environment and the incredible opportunity to start my head coaching career here,” she said. “I am excited to work with the team and build something special together.”

When asked about her goals for the upcoming season, Dutton emphasized the importance of establishing a winning culture. “My goal for the program is to build a winning culture that compete at a high level and create an experience for the girls that they can look back on with great memories, just like the ones I have from my playing days.”

Dutton also highlighted what she looks for when recruiting new talent: “When I’m recruiting, I look for an athlete who has a competitive edge and a team-first attitude. It’s important to find players who are not only skilled but also committed to the collective success of the team.”

In addition to her role as head softball coach, Dutton will also be serving as an academic advisor at MCC, further contributing to the development and success of student-athletes both on and off the field.

Dutton holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Dubuque, where they balanced their academic and athletic commitments with distinction.

As Dutton embarks on this new chapter, the entire MCC community is eager to see the positive impact she will undoubtedly bring to the softball program and the college as a whole.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Dutton to MCC and Tiger Athletics,” commented Ryan Flack, MCC Athletics Director. “Callie’s competitiveness and enthusiasm will benefit our student-athletes. We are looking forward to her building a competitive program, from the ground up and we are fortunate to have her lead our softball program.”
