Neuroth named NICL West MVP
Mustang senior is first repeat pick since Fritz
The East Marshall softball team’s run to the state tournament began with an undefeated NICL West Division championship, paved again by the conference’s Outstanding Player of the Year: Morgan Neuroth.
Neuroth was voted the league’s MVP for the second year in a row, making her the first back-to-back selection in the conference since fellow Mustang Mariah Fritz in 2014 and 2015.
Neuroth pitched her team to six wins in as many starts in the circle, finishing with a 0.74 earned run average over 38 innings. She walked a total of eight batters and struck out 54, allowing an opposing batting average of just .127. She also batted .433 in league play with four doubles, a triple and four RBIs from the leadoff spot.
Neuroth was one of five East Marshall players voted to the first team while simultaneously earning her fifth all-conference honor. She was a four-time unanimous first-team selection in addition to earning honorable mention selection as an eighth grader.
Joining Neuroth on the all-conference first team were fellow senior Rayne McIlrath, juniors Bailey Grant and Vaeda Bryan, and sophomore Peyton Grabenbauer. Jary Hoskey was named the conference’s Coach of the Year.
McIlrath, a third baseman, led the Mustangs and the conference with a .567 batting average in league play. She hit three doubles and drove in 11 runs, scoring 10 times. Bryan was a unanimous first-team outfield selection after batting .346 with a double, five RBIs and a league-leading 11 runs scored. Grant, a junior catcher, earned her third-straight first-team honor after batting .400 in league games with two doubles and nine RBIs.
Grabenbauer hit .519 with four doubles, a triple and a division-best 14 RBIs. She also went 3-0 in the circle during conference play, striking out 24 batters in 18 innings. She finished with a 0.78 ERA.
Grundy Center was represented on the first team by senior Lucy Lebo and freshman Ava Heeren.
Lebo earned her fourth all-conference selection as the senior shortstop was voted to the first team three years in a row after earning second-team honors as a freshman. This summer, Lebo batted .286 with three doubles, six RBIs and five runs scored. She also posted a .911 fielding percentage with just four errors in 45 total chances.
Heeren, an outfielder, hit .269 with two doubles and three RBIs.
South Hardin’s Hailey Rosonke, like Neuroth, was voted unanimous first-team for the fourth year in a row.
Grundy Center had five second-team selections in senior first baseman Carlie Willis, junior utility Kyndra Dieken, sophomore outfielder Allison Koch and freshmen pitchers Ava Mundt and Maddy Hendershot. East Marshall’s second-team picks were seniors Ava Bringmann (second base) and Makayla Kerber (outfield).
Honorable mention selections included East Marshall junior Makayla Hala and Grundy Center sophomore Lauren Zajac.
