Johnson medals to lead Marshalltown boys cross country to second at Valley

WEST DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ cross country team claimed three of the top four spots to finish second out of 11 teams at the 50th Tom Karpen Invitational on Tuesday at Valley Southwoods Freshman High School.

Valley’s five scoring runners all finished 14th or better as the host Tigers captured the team title with 40 points. Marshalltown, led by individual champion Preston Johnson, was second with 91 points. Johnston (117) was third.

Johnson, a sophomore, captured the meet’s individual gold with his winning time of 16 minutes, 38.6 seconds. Senior John Moellers was moments back in second place (16:45.6), and junior Carter Nunn was fourth in 16:59.7.

Caleb Rasmussen came across in 41st with a time of 19:34.6, while Myles Goldman was 45th in 19:42.5 to round out the Bobcats’ scoring. Elliot Kodis (71st, 21:29.4) also competed for MHS.

On the girls side, Marshalltown sent just four runners into the varsity field of six teams. Ankeny Centennial (29), Valley (31), Norwalk (73) and Ankeny (111) scored as complete teams, while MHS and Des Moines Lincoln did not.

Anessa Morrison led Marshalltown with a 29th-place finish and a time of 24:31.0. Emerson Eastman (37th, 27:39.5), Kaitlyn Yepez Ramirez (38th, 27:53.9) and Sophia Valdez Chavez (39th, 28:29.5) rounded out the Bobcats’ squad.

Centennial’s Anika Mohrhauser (19:18.8) won the individual title.
