Top-ranked Spartans slam the Sailors 48-6
GRUNDY CENTER — Brody Zinkula rushed for 151 yards and three touchdowns and had a pick-six to help Class 1A No. 1 Grundy Center defeat Waterloo Columbus 48-6 on Friday night in District 4 play.
Zinkula accounted for most of the Spartans’ 174 rushing yards in the win, scoring on touchdown runs of 55, 2 and 13 yards. He also returned an interception 94 yards to paydirt, following up teammate Judd Jirovsky’s 30-yard pick-six just two minutes later during the third quarter.
Waterloo Columbus (0-5, 0-2) was within 13-6 after scoring to start the second quarter, but it was all Spartans (5-0, 2-0) from there.
Jirovsky tossed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Tiernan Vokes and added a 9-yard touchdown run and a pick-six to the win.
Jirovsky finished 9-for-10 passing for 132 yards, while Lake Schrage was 1-for-2 for 10 yards. Vokes finished with six catches fr 92 yards and a score.
Jacob Hoy led the Spartan defense with five tackles and an interception of his own. Vokes, Zinkula and Ryder Slifer had four tackles apiece.
Grundy Center visits South Hardin (5-0, 2-0) next Friday in a clash of unbeaten Highway 175 rivals.
