MCC men’s hoops staff adds Metzger as assistant

Jeff Metzger
Marshalltown Community College announced on Monday that Jeff Metzger has joined the MCC men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant.
Metzger has a diverse coaching background spanning from 2017. He began his career as a head boys freshman coach and varsity assistant at Adam’s Central High School in Indiana (2017-2018). He then moved on to Spire Institute in Ohio, where he served as an assistant coach for both the men’s post-graduate and boys’ high school teams (2018).
In 2018-2019, he was an assistant coach for the men’s post-graduate team at Scotland Campus in Pennsylvania. At Central Pointe Christian Academy in Florida (2019-2020), he held the dual roles of head coach for the men’s post-graduate 2nd team and assistant coach for the 1st team.
He continued his coaching journey as an assistant coach for the boys’ national high school team at Elevation Prep in Indiana (2021).
Returning to Indiana, Metzger became the boys’ junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant at Northrop High School (2021-2022). In 2022-2023, he served as the boys’ head varsity coach at Southern California Academy.
His most recent coaching experience includes a stint as a men’s student assistant coach at the University of Northwestern Ohio (2023).
“My friend Lavonte Davis, who was a graduate assistant at Iowa State last year, was initially slated to join the coaching staff here at MCC,” Metzger said. “However, when he accepted a position at Penn State, he reached out to me and the rest, as they say, is history.”
As an assistant at MCC, Metzger is hoping to bring certain skills to the program.
“I like to train guys on how to play and think when they are tired,” he said. “A lot of my individual training consists of reading and reacting and doing drills that focus not only on physical strength but mental strength as well.”
Along with his role at MCC as an assistant men’s basketball coach, Metzger is also a residential coordinator in the MCC dorms.
