Spartans blank Hudson, win 33rd straight game
GRUNDY CENTER — Brayden Davie returned the opening kick 85 yards for a touchdown and the top-ranked Grundy Center football team scored a 35-0 victory over Hudson for the program’s 33rd straight win.
Quarterback Judd Jirovsky was a part of the remaining four touchdowns for the Spartans (8-0, 5-0), who had already secured the top seed in Class 1A District 4. Jirovsky threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Hoy to make it 14-0 after one quarter of play, and Grundy Center got three more scores before halftime.
Jirovsky intercepted a Kiean Crile pass and returned it 96 yards for a touchdown, and he added a pair of touchdown passes to Tiernan Vokes. The pair connected for scoring plays of 35 and 23 yards to give Grundy Center a 35-0 halftime lead.
Jirovsky finished 15-for-23 for 182 yards passing, with Hoy catching seven passes for 72 yards and Vokes making four receptions for 70 yards.
Hudson (5-3, 2-3) was held to 110 yards of total offense but still advances to the playoffs as the No. 4 seed from the district. Ryker Thoren led the Spartan defense with six tackles, and Jirovsky made two interceptions.
State playoff pairings will be released on Saturday.
