Spartans rush past Alburnett, improve to 7-0

ALBURNETT — Grundy Center football remained perfect on the season with a 41-13 victory at Alburnett on Friday night.

The Spartans, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in 1A District 4. Alburnett slipped to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in district play.

Grundy Center accumulated 330 yards of total offense, including 205 on the ground. Brody Zinkula had 17 carries for 69 yards and two scores, Judd Jirovsky had six totes for 39 yards and two touchdowns and Pete Lebo added five attempts for 90 yards and one score. Tiernan Vokes added a touchdown catch on a 29-yard pass from Jirovsky. The Spartans led 34-7 at halftime.

While Alburnett outgained Grundy Center in total offense, 370-330, the Spartans snagged three interceptions — one each for Lebo, Jirovsky and Jacob Hoy — and scored 21 points off those turnovers. Ryker Thoren led the tackling stats with 11.5 total tackles and 2.5 total tackles for loss.

Grundy Center returns to Spartan Stadium next week for a regular-season finale with Hudson.
