SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat girls swimmers make waves at Hoover

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls’ swimming team won every event in a four-team meet hosted by Des Moines Hoover on Tuesday night.

The Bobcats beat Atlantic (128-22), Carroll (132-17) and the host Huskies (134-18) in the quadrangular meet, sweeping the top-two spots in eight of 10 races in the pool.

Leia Hernandez and Emma Case both went 4-for-4, winning in each of their events. Hernandez claimed the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and also participated on a pair of winning Bobcat relays — the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Case claimed the top spot in the 200 individual medley, the 100 butterfly, and swam on the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Adele Beek was a three-time winner, as was Maisie Gummert. Beek was first to the wall in the 100 breaststroke and a member of the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay, while Gummert got gold in the 200 and 500 freestyle, and the 400 freestyle relay.

Vokes sets the pace at Jesup

JESUP — Grundy Center junior Emerson Vokes ran a new personal-best time in a win at Tuesday’s Jesup Invitational at Jesup Golf and Country Club.

Vokes completed the course in 15:20, which is also the best time of any runner in 2A so far this fall. Oelwein’s Conall Sauser was the runner-up in 15:47.

Grundy Center was 15th out of 22 teams at the massive meet, scoring a 381 team score. Jayce Fryslie scored 30th in 17:43 for the Spartans.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck finished 21st as a team with 504 points, led by Devin Wrider in 61st in 18:54 and Caleb Bowser in 81st in 19:35.

Grundy Center’s girls were fifth out of 17 teams with a 161 final score. Grace Storjohann scored 4th-place points and was fifth overall in 19:38; Evelyn Geerdes scored 27th in 21:21 and Maddy Hendershot, Karlee Lynch and Makenna Steinmeyer all finished within 10 seconds of each other to finish 42nd, 43rd and 45th, respectively.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Katelyn Monaghan was 126th in 32:38.

STC volleyball wins 5-set thriller

VINTON — South Tama County volleyball held on for a five-set victory at Vinton-Shellsburg on Tuesday.

The Trojans (9-15) won 22-25, 25-16, 25-18, 21-25, 15-11 and have now won four of their last six games. It was also STC’s first win over Vinton-Shellsburg since 2019.

Janette Cervantes had 17 kills for the Trojans, with 15 from Paisley Bro, 14 for Macy Welsh and 10 for Mady Boriskey. Skyla Beck finished with 42 assists to her attackers.

Keinzle Boriskey added five total blocks at the front of the net and Cervantes accounted for four total blocks. Beck added 18 digs, with 17 for Cervantes and 15 for Bro.

STC was steady at the service line, missing just seven of 106 serves. Scout Ridout dropped in four aces on 22-of-23 serving and Beck and Madeline Paxton each finished with three aces.
