SPORTS SHORTS: Rebels rumble over Wolverines, 57-6
GLADBROOK — Drew Eilers threw for three touchdowns and was one of four Gladbrook-Reinbeck football players with a rushing touchdown in Friday’s 57-6 romp over GMG.
The Rebels finished the regular season 7-1 as undefeated champions of 8 Player District 4 at 6-0 and will host Kee on Friday in a first-round playoff matchup at 7 p.m. GMG’s season ends at 1-7.
Eilers completed all seven of his pass attempts on Friday for 146 yards, including two touchdowns to Michael Boyd and one to Treyvon Herron. The senior quarterback also had four carries for 49 yards and a score; Hudson Clark, Herron and Drew Stanek all added a touchdown each on the ground.
Boyd led the defensive categories with 11 total tackles, with two for a loss. Eilers added 5 1/2 tackles with 1 1/2 tackles for loss and a quarterback sack.
Late scores lift Trojans past Knights
LA PORTE CITY — A pair of fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns for Michael Lechnir helped West Marshall to a 14-0 win at Union Community in the regular-season finale on Friday.
Lechnir scored on a 5-yard run to start the fourth quarter and on the ensuing kickoff, a Kinnick Geers tackle forced a Union fumble recovered by Jace Eich on Union’s 20-yard line. The Trojans scored on the short field with a two-yard dive from Lechnir on 4th-and-goal with 7:38 left in the game, one of two fourth-down conversions for Lechnir in the drive.
Lechnir had five carries for 18 yards and the two scores. Ben Gonzalez carried the ball 22 times for 83 yards and Vincent Clawson added 13 carries for 35 yards.
Defensively, Lechnir added a team-leading nine tackles, including 2.5 for a loss; Caden Pfantz added two interceptions, six total tackles and a tackle for loss.
West Marshall finishes the regular-season at 6-2 overall and went 4-1 to finish second in Class 2A District 6. The Trojans welcome West Liberty (3-5) for a first-round playoff game with a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday.
