SPORTS SHORTS: Vokes lowers PR time, wins D-NH Invite
DIKE — Grundy Center’s Emerson Vokes ran a new personal-best time of 15:12 to win the Dike-New Hartford Invitational at Fox Ridge Golf Course on Tuesday.
Vokes was 27 seconds faster than runner-up Jesse Gomez of Denver. It’s the fifth win of the season for the Spartan junior, who is ranked No. 2 in this week’s Class 2A individual rankings. Vokes’ previous-best time was exactly one week earlier at a meet in Jesup, running 15:20.
Grundy Center finished 17th as a team with a 396 team score. Brayden Wallis scored 83rd in 19:50 and Oliver Del Castillo scored 85th in 19:55.
West Marshall’s boys had the best team finish, placing seventh with 223 points. Erick Rosas-Canchola led the Trojans in 32nd in 18:08 and Urijah Courter was 40th in 18:24 — the Trojans’ top five all finished within 1 minute, 15 seconds of each other.
BCLUW’s Cayden White led the Comets, scoring 18th place points and 20th overall in 17:25. The Comets were 18th as a team with a 399 team score.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck was 19th with a 432 team score, paced by Devin Wrider in 40th overall in 18:22. North Tama’s Cayd Cooper was 119th overall in 21:02.
Eldridge, Storjohann in top 10 at Dike
DIKE — West Marshall’s Dalaney Eldridge and Grundy Center’s Grace Storjohann notched top-10 individual finishes at Monday’s Dike-New Hartford Invitational at Fox Ridge Golf Course.
Eldridge, a freshman, was seventh in 19:33; Spartan junior Storjohann was ninth in 19:39.
Grundy Center had the best area team finish, placing sixth with 193 points. Evelyn Geerdes scored 27th in 21:09, Maddy Hendershot was 44th in 22:16 and Karlee Lynch 45th in 22:16.
West Marshall placed eighth as a team with a 213 team score. Addie Thompson finished just outside the top 10 individuals, 11th overall and scoring 10th-place points in 19:43.
BCLUW’s girls were 12th as a team; Kalia Stover finished 16th overall in 20:09 and Abby Kemp was 25th in 20:52. North Tama was 17th as a team, led by Rachael Murty’s 50th-place finish in 22:19. G-R’s Katelyn Monaghan was 130th in 31:53.
Grundy Center advances to NICL volleyball finals
LA PORTE CITY — Grundy Center volleyball advanced to the final four of the North Iowa Cedar League tournament with wins over Hudson and Union at Union High School on Tuesday.
Grundy defeated Hudson, 27-25, 17-25, 15-13 and downed the Knights, 25-22, 25-21. The Spartans, ranked 11th in Class 2A, will take on Wapsie Valley in the semifinals on Thursday at Denver. Wapsie Valley upended fourth-ranked Dike-New Hartford in straight sets on Tuesday. The winner will face either sixth-ranked Aplington-Parkersburg or top-ranked Denver in the finals later that night.
East Marshall lost its first-round match to Union, 25-14, 25-20, and were swept by Hudson, 25-15, 25-8, in the first-round consolation. The Mustangs will play again on Thursday at a site to be determined against other teams that lost their first-round consolation matchup.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck, ranked 15th in Class 1A, fell to the Cyclones, 25-7, 25-21, in a first-round match at Sumner-Fredericksburg on Tuesday. The Rebels bounced back with a 26-24, 25-17 win over Waterloo Columbus and will compete against other consolation first-round winners on Thursday at a site to be determined.
Trojans run off Rams in 4 sets
STATE CENTER — West Marshall volleyball staved off Greene County in four competitive sets at West Marshall High School on Monday.
The Trojans won 25-20, 27-25, 20-25, 26-24, improving to 10-18 overall and 6-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.
Lily Zahnd had 18 kills and eight digs for the victors; Avery Evertsen added 11 kills, three total blocks, and five digs.
Amelia Ranson and Kylee Schuler had five total blocks each at the net. Reese Jensen led the Trojans with 24 digs and added three aces on 11-of-11 serving; Lillian Fischer contributed 11 digs.
