BCLUW pressures Warriors into blowout win
CONRAD — BCLUW boys basketball turned up the heat on Friday night.
After a close start with Meskwaki at BCLUW High School, the Comets got aggressive and hammered away at the Warriors defensively to sprint away with a 79-32 rout for their first win of the season.
Wyatt Gould scored 26 points to lead BCLUW, including 17 of those in the lopsided second half. Owen Myers added 14 points and Aiden Frank had 13 points as the Comets improved to 1-1 overall.
Meskwaki led 17-16 early in the second quarter and after a BCLUW timeout, the Comets bounced back with eight points in a row. It was 24-19 BCLUW in the second quarter when the Comets unleashed a 31-0 run spanning the end of the first half and most of the third quarter.
“We were trying to work on some stuff earlier where we don’t put as much pressure on teams and it wasn’t doing what we wanted,” BCLUW head coach Evan Janssen said. “We went to the pressure option and the guys really fell in line with it, and I thought they stepped up to the challenge.”
The Comets led 34-19 at halftime and had exploded to a 60-25 advantage by the end of the third quarter, with Gould and the Comets slashing the Meskwaki defense.
“That’s a kid that we’ve believed in for a long time,” Janssen said of Gould, a junior. “He’s got all the skill in the world and he’s just got to believe it himself. I’m fortunate to have watched him grow for a long time and I can’t wait to see what this season brings and just how confident he can become.”
Corbin Shuckahosee contributed a pair of 3-pointers and Layne Steuhm added another triple while Yamni Whiteman shut down early attempts in the paint from BCLUW before the Comets started turning the Warriors over again and again.
The Comets are at home against Baxter next Tuesday.
“We’ve got a great opportunity Tuesday,” Janssen said. “Baxter’s the team everyone wants to knock off but we’re going to need to play better defensively to get that done. And offensively, we can’t be stagnant when things get in trouble and we’re not sure what to do next — we’ve got to find something to do and our kids did a much better job of that tonight in the second half.”
