SPORTS SHORTS: STC girls wrestle to top of Newton’s Cardinal Classic

NEWTON — The South Tama girls’ wrestling team crowned six champions on its way to the team title at the Newton Cardinal Classic on Saturday.

The Trojans tallied 260 points to distance themselves from the 12-team field. Carlisle (204.5) and Pella (142) were the next closest competitors.

Bracket champions for STC were London Jaennette (120 pounds), Keylee Holloway (125), Maylee Rucker (140), Paisley Bro (145), Abigail Chyma (155) and Autumn Elsbury (170).

Jaennette won three matches by fall, as did Holloway and Chyma. Bro beat back four competitors, all by pinfall, and Elsbury needed just two pins to win at 170 after receiving a first-round bye.

Elsbury, the defending state runner-up, is ranked No. 1 at 170 in Class 2A by IAwrestle, while Chyma is rated 10th.

STC also got second-place finishes from Livia Smith (100), Brooklyn Mitchell (130), Ava Perkins (135) and Kinley Jimenez (235).

Hollingsworth, Wedgwood lead Storm at BGM Duals

BROOKLYN — The South Hardin-BCLUW girls’ wrestling team went 0-4 in finishing last out of eight teams at the BGM Duals on Saturday.

The Storm fell to Gilbert (54-18), Cedar Rapids Kennedy (54-11) and Colfax-Mingo (54-23) in pool play before bowing to host BGM (30-18) in the match to decide seventh place.

Taya Hollingsworth went 4-0 on the day at 155 pounds, leading the Storm with three pins and one win by forfeit. Hollingsworth is ranked fourth in Class 1A by IAwrestle.

Leila Wedgwood, rated 10th at 130, was 3-1 with a pin and two wins by technical fall. They were the only Storm wrestlers to score match victories on the day.

Wheater wins to lead Mustangs at Woodward-Granger

WOODWARD — East Marshall/GMG senior wrestler Drew Wheater won the 190-pound bracket to lead the Mustangs to ninth out of 12 teams at Saturday’s Dennis Field Invitational hosted by Woodward-Granger.

EM/GMG racked up 78 points on the day. Woodward-Granger won its own event with 191 points, followed by Belle Plaine (139) and Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center (126).

Wheater climbed to the top of the 190 podium by scoring a pair of second-period pins before beating Woodward-Granger’s Oscar Potter in the finals by a 5-1 decision.

Second-place points went to Jordan Meling at 138, as he fell to W-G’s 11th-ranked Tanner Paustian in the finals, 13-2. Xavier Slifer scored third at 132, bouncing back from a semifinal loss to win his next two matches by pinfall. Kolten Good came away with fourth at 120.

Trio of Trojan boys claim crowns at Wapsie Valley

FAIRBANK — The West Marshall boys wrestling team took second out of 14 teams at Wapsie Valley’s Chris Davis Invitational on Saturday.

Nashua-Plainfield ran away with the team title, scoring 262.5 points, while West Marshall (209) bridged the gap to the rest of the field. Waukon (150) was third and host Wapsie Valley (139) was fourth.

Urijah Courter (113 pounds), Jon Gonzalez (120) and Shane Hanford (150) won bracket titles for the Trojans, while runner-up results went to James Decker (113), Jack Decker (126), Kinnick Geers (144) and Ben Gonzalez (190).

Courter won five matches on the day, with four of them coming by pinfall and the other by technical fall. He pinned Waukon’s Kolton Grotegut in 1 minute, 1 second, in the title bout. Jon Gonzalez needed to win only twice, scoring two technical falls on his way to a title. Hanford also won twice for his gold medal performance, once by fall and once by technical fall.
