SPORTS SHORTS: Hawkeyes romp past Indiana, 85-60

IOWA CITY — Payton Sandfort scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half, sophomores Owen Freeman and Brock Harding added double-doubles and Iowa pummeled Indiana 85-60 on Saturday night.

Sandfort only had a pair of free throws in the first half, but he made 7 of 9 shots with four 3-pointers after the break for the Hawkeyes (12-4, 3-2 Big Ten). Freeman totaled 16 points and 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. He also blocked four shots. Harding had 10 points and 10 assists for his second double-double.

Drew Thelwell and Josh Dix both scored 12 for Iowa.

Myles Rice had 12 points and five assists for the Hoosiers (13-4, 4-2), who saw a five-game win streak end. Oumar Ballo totaled 10 points and 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.

Harris powers Cyclones in 2-0 trip to Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Iowa State women’s basketball team wrapped up a 2-0 trip to the Grand Canyon State with Saturday’s 79-58 win over Arizona.

Iowa State (12-6, 3-2 Big 12) defeated Arizona State 90-83 on Wednesday.

The Cyclones made at least 10 3-pointers for the second-straight game and sixth time this season, led by Sydney Harris who made half of ISU’s 10 triples. Harris had a season-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting to go with seven rebounds.

Emily Ryan had the next-highest total scoring 15, missing just one of seven shots. Audi Crooks scored in double figures for the 50th game in a row, adding 11 points, and Addy Brown was the fourth Cyclone in double figures with 10 points. Brown also had game-highs of eight rebounds and six assists in the win over Arizona (11-6, 2-2).

Panther women put away Bradley in second half

PEORIA, Ill. — The Northern Iowa women’s basketball team outscored Bradley 38-17 in the second half of its 67-44 triumph over the Braves in Sunday’s Missouri Valley Conference contest.

Kayba Laube made five 3-pointers on her way to 21 points and Maya McDermott shot 9-for-11 from the field to match her with 21 points as well for the Panthers (9-7, 4-1). Ryley Goebel had 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots as UNI pulled away for the win.

Solell Barnes led Bradley (8-8, 2-3) with 10 points.

UNI is back at home on Thursday with a 6 p.m. game against Murray State.

Balanced Bulldogs blast past Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. — Six players scored in double figures as the Drake women’s basketball team racked up its ninth-straight win with an 85-64 victory over host Illinois State on Sunday afternoon.

Katie Dinnebier was one of three Bulldogs to achieve a double-double, leading the way with 18 points and 12 assists. Anna Miller had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Courtney Becker added 11 points and 12 boards.

Abbie Aalsma added 12 points, Shannon Fornshell scored 10 points, and Ava Hawthorne contributed 11 points off the bench for Drake (11-5, 5-0).

Shannon Dowell led Illinois State (9-7, 3-2) with 14 points.

Drake returns home to host Belmont in MVC play Thursday at 6 p.m.

Hawkeye matmen mash Badgers, 45-0

MADISON, Wis. — The No. 2 Iowa wrestling team blanked Wisconsin 45-0 in Sunday’s Big Ten Conference dual at the UW Field House.

Iowa chalked up 31 takedowns to Wisconsin’s two, scoring bonus points in eight of 10 matches.

Gabe Arnold pinned Dylan Russo halfway through the opening period of their 184-pound match, and Stephen Buchanan followed with a 40-second pin of Niccolo Colucci at 197.

Drake Ayala (133), Kyle Parco (149) and Michael Caliendo (165) recorded technical falls, while Ben Kueter (285) tallied a major decision in the final match.

Cyclones close out Virginia Duals sweep

HAMPTON, Va. — The No. 13 Iowa State wrestling team toppled Rider and Bucknell on Saturday at the Virginia Duals, winning 14 of 20 matches on the mat.

ISU improved to 7-3 overall by beating Rider 30-9 and Bucknell 28-12.

Seven different wrestlers went 2-0 for the Cyclones: Kysen Terukina (125 pounds), Evan Frost (133), Jacob Frost (141), Paniro Johnson (149), Cody Chittum (157), Evan Bockman (184) and Daniel Herrera (285).

UNI wrestling breezes to National Duals title

CEDAR FALLS — The No. 7 Northern Iowa wrestling team won the NWCA Multi-Divisional National Dual Meet Championships on Friday and Saturday, racking up wins over Sacred Heart (38-7), Ohio (48-3), Northern Colorado (38-3) and No. 14 South Dakota State (31-3).

The Panthers improved to 8-0 on the year by winning the 14-team tournament. UNI won nine of 10 matches on the final day to take down both Northern Colorado and SDSU.

Eight of UNI’s nine wins against Northern Colorado came with bonus points, while four more major decisions against the Jackrabbits led to the championship victory.

Iowa women go 4-0 to win National Duals tourney

CEDAR FALLS — The top-ranked University of Iowa women’s wrestling team clinched its second straight NWCA National Duals title with a win over second-seeded North Central College on Saturday in the UNI-Dome.

The Hawkeyes (13-0) defeated Aurora (35-10) and Wartburg (42-1) on Friday before taking down No. 3 McKendree (33-11) and No. 2 North Central (28-13) on Saturday.

“I am so proud of how we went out and fought in every match today,” said Iowa head coach Clarissa Chun. “It was a battle to the end, and we had some gutsy matches. Every point matters in duals, and we were able to score each time, which was huge. We are going to continue to build off of this momentum as we head into the second half of our season.”

The Hawkeyes host Grand Valley State and Augustana College this Saturday in their final home dual of the season.
