SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall boys rout Roland-Story at the Well

DES MOINES — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team put away Roland-Story with a dominant third quarter, topping the Norsemen 50-28 in Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash at Wells Fargo Arena.

The Trojans led 24-15 at the half before breaking the game open with an 18-2 advantage in the third period. West Marshall (5-3, 4-2) charted its third-straight win in the process.

Lucas Barnes scored a game-high 13 points to pace the Trojans, and DJ Ridout added 11 points. Noah DeSotel finished with eight points and seven rebounds, and AJ Dee chipped in seven points.

Jake Berggren led Roland-Story (2-5, 2-4) with eight points.

West Marshall returns home to host Greene County on Tuesday night.

Wallis, Spartans knock off unbeaten Falcons

GRUNDY CENTER — Brayden Wallis scored a career-high 21 points and the Grundy Center boys’ basketball team won a battle between unbeatens, knocking off Aplington-Parkersburg 68-58 on Friday night.

Wallis hit a pair of 3-pointers and went 5-for-5 from the free-throw line to help the Spartans improve to 6-0. Judd Jirovsky added 16 points and Ryker Thoren had a season-high 15 to aid the cause. Brody Zinkula finished with eight points and Tiernan Vokes chipped in six.

Grundy Center led 32-19 at the half and withstood Aplington-Parkersburg (7-1) after the intermission. A 18-6 first-quarter advantage for the Spartans proved to be the difference.

Trevan Thomas scored a game-high 26 points to pace A-P, and Caleb Campbell finished with 16 more for the Falcons.

Grundy Center girls succumb to A-P

GRUNDY CENTER — Aplington-Parkersburg got out to an early lead and outlasted the Grundy Center girls’ basketball team for a 46-39 triumph in Friday’s cross-NICL contest.

The visiting Falcons (7-2) led 31-18 at the half and held off the Spartans (5-3) the rest of the way.

Eva Walker and Ava Eddy scored 10 points apiece to lead Aplington-Parkersburg, which has won three in a row.

Karlee Lynch scored a game-high 15 points to lead Grundy Center, which had its three-game win streak snapped. Kali Aldrich added eight points, Maddy Hendershot had seven and Caturella Brown finished with six.

The Spartans shot 17-for-28 from the free-throw line in the loss. Grundy Center starts a three-game week with Tuesday’s trip to Oelwein.
