COLLEGE HOOPS: Hawkeye women handle Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Iowa women’s basketball team defeated Michigan 79-66 on Wednesday night, improving to 19-9 overall and 9-8 in Big Ten Conference play.
Hawkeye senior Sydney Affolter set a new career high scoring 24 points to go with 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double this season. Fellow senior Lucy Olsen added 20 points, including four 3-pointers, and five rebounds, while junior Hannah Stuelke contributed 13 points and five boards.
Michigan (19-9, 10-7) led just once at 15-14 but never caught the Hawkeyes after losing the lead. Syla Swords had a double-double of 22 points and 10 boards for the Wolverines.
Iowa turned Michigan’s 16 turnovers into 28 points.
The Hawkeyes return home for Senior Day against Wisconsin on Sunday. Tip-off inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena is set for 3 p.m.
Northern Iowa defeats UIC 74-52
CEDAR FALLS — Jacob Hutson’s 26 points helped Northern Iowa defeat UIC 74-52 on Wednesday night.
Hutson shot 10 of 14 from the field, including 4 for 7 from 3-point range, and went 2 for 3 from the line for the Panthers (20-10, 14-5 Missouri Valley Conference). Tytan Anderson added 14 points while finishing 7 of 12 from the floor while he also had eight rebounds. Ben Schwieger shot 5 for 9, including 1 for 3 from beyond the arc to finish with 12 points.
Ahmad Henderson II finished with 13 points and three steals for the Flames (17-13, 9-10). Tyem Freeman added eight points and two steals for UIC. Jordan Mason also put up eight points.
The score was 41-26 at halftime, with Hutson racking up 19 points.
Abreu’s 19 lead Drake over Evansville 65-61
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Daniel Abreu scored 19 points as Drake beat Evansville 65-61 on Wednesday night, clinching the outright Missouri Valley Conference championship for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
Abreu added five rebounds for the Bulldogs (26-3, 16-3 Missouri Valley Conference). Tavion Banks scored 15 points and added five rebounds. Bennett Stirtz had 14 points and shot 5 of 10 from the field, including 1 for 5 from 3-point range, and went 3 for 3 from the line.
Tayshawn Comer led the Purple Aces (11-19, 8-11) in scoring, finishing with 20 points. Evansville also got 14 points from Tanner Cuff. Gabriel Pozzato also had nine points, six rebounds and four assists.
Drake went into halftime leading 38-27. Abreu scored 11 points in the half. Abreu’s layup with 9:04 left in the second half gave Drake the lead for good at 50-49.
