Johnson wins second Big 12 Title
TULSA, Okla. — Iowa State 149-pounder Paniro Johnson won his second Big 12 Conference wrestling title Sunday night inside the BOK Center, coming from behind to beat UNI’s top-seeded Colin Realbuto, 5-4, on a takedown with 22 seconds left.
The victory flipped the dual result between the two foes from three weeks ago when Johnson lost to Realbuto in sudden victory.
Johnson, also the 2023 Big 12 champion, became the 39th two-time conference champion in school history and the first since David Carr won four (2020-23).
Iowa State finished the Big 12 team race in fourth place with 107.5 points behind champion Oklahoma State (153.5), UNI (149.5) and South Dakota State (110).
ISU’s MJ Gaitan capped an incredible run through the consolation side of his 174-pound bracket, winning four straight after a first-round loss to earn third place.
At 165, Aiden Riggins placed fourth as the No. 8 seed. He advanced to the third-place match via medical forfeit before dropping a 1-0 decision to top-seeded Terrell Barraclough.
