McKowen hired by Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Former Mr. Iowa Basketball Brooks McKowen has been hired by Missouri Western State University as its new men’s basketball coach after 12 seasons at Upper Iowa.

Missouri Western announced the hire Tuesday.

McKowen guided the Peacocks to a 209-148 record and three NCAA Tournament appearances in his 12 seasons with the Division II school.

McKowen’s teams have won at least 21 games in three of the previous four seasons, including a 21-9 mark in 2024-25, a 22-10 record in 23-24, and a program best 26-6 season in 21-22. The Peacocks have posted winning seasons in 10 of McKowen’s 12 years on the sidelines. Known for their trademark fast-paced brand, the Peacocks have averaged at least 80 points per game in each of the last 12 seasons.

McKowen graduated from Wapsie Valley in 2003 having scored a state record 1,002 points in a season and 2,831 points in his career. He played four years at Northern Iowa, where he ranks second in assists and fourth in minutes played.

McKowen spent three seasons (2007-2010) on the coaching staff at UNI before serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Southwest Minnesota State.

Starting at $4.38/week.
