Iowa football lands pair of transfers

IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa football team recently announced a pair of signees out of the transfer portal in cornerback Shahid Barros and quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski.

Barros is a 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior transfer from South Dakota. Barros has two years of starting experience at the FCS level and is expected to compete for a starting spot on the outside of the Iowa defensive backfield during his last season of eligibility.

In 2024, Barros had 41 tackles and one interception, following a season of 49 tackles and two interceptions with the Coyotes.

Barros played at St. Thomas More prep in Connecticut for former Hawkeye quarterback Jason Manson, who is now the director of player development with the Hawkeyes.

Hecklinski is a Wake Forest transfer, rejoining former Demon Deacons offensive coordinator Warren Ruggiero, who was hired this offseason as an offensive analyst at Iowa.

Hecklinski is the fourth new quarterback to join the room at Iowa along with Mark Gronowski, Hank Brown and Jimmy Sullivan. Jackson Stratton is the lone returner from the 2024 team after Brendan Sullivan transferred to Tulane.

Hecklinski was set to be the third-string QB at Wake Forest after redshirt senior Robby Ashford (South Carolina) and sophomore Deshawn Purdie (Charlotte) transferred to Wake Forest with starting experience.

Starting at $4.38/week.
