New-look ’Cats scratch Scarlets

Marshalltown rips into DM East girls, 11-0

T-R PHOTO BY JAKE RYDER - Marshalltown sophomore Kate Sandvick makes a backhand return at the net during the No. 1 doubles match in Tuesday’s dual meet against Des Moines East at the Marshalltown Court Complex. Sandvick and teammate Kennedy Feldman dispatched their Trojan counterparts Lathida Saengdara and Jennifer Martinez-Martinez, 6-1, 6-0.

Even with a slew of new faces, Marshalltown girls tennis is looking to reload for another Iowa Alliance Conference title this spring.

The Bobcats swept Des Moines East, 11-0, at the Marshalltown Court Complex on Tuesday.

Marshalltown dropped only one game to the Scarlets, with all singles matches and four of five doubles matches ending in 6-0, 6-0 sweeps.

Bobcat senior Kennedy Feldman handled business at No. 1 singles and teamed up with sophomore Kate Sandvick for a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles.

Feldman returns to the court after a state doubles berth alongside Rebekah Downs last season.

“Her and Kate make for great partners,” MHS head coach John Fiscus said. “Kennedy’s improved a lot, especially with her net play, and Kate’s always been really good and had a high tennis IQ. It’s a great pairing.

Only two of Marshalltown’s top six girls in singles return this year in Feldman and Lily Zahnd, but the Bobcats look solid, off to a 3-0 overall start including wins over Mason City and a rain-shortened victory over Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

“They’re coming along even moreso compared to last year’s team that won conference,” Fiscus said. “We just kind of reloaded with some girls who played well last year. … We’re not dropping off but competing and pushing and hopefully things will end up like they were last year.”

Next up for Marshalltown is a doubleheader on Thursday morning against Des Moines Hoover and Boone at Hoover High.

Boone was Marshalltown’s toughest regular-season match last year, with the Bobcats sneaking past the Toreadors for a 6-5 win. The Bobcats shut out Hoover, 11-0, last year.

“Boone competes very well with us and I think it’ll be even more of a challenge for us this year,” Fiscus said. “Hopefully we can pull that one out again.”
