CONRAD -- The BCLUW boys track and field team scored 76 points to finish third as a team at the Comets' Early Bird meet at BCLUW High School on Thursday night.
Jesup won the team title with 124 points, followed by Des Moines North with 94 points. GMG placed eighth with 21 points, North Tama tied for ninth with 16 points and Gladbrook-Reinbeck scored three points.
The Comets didn't win any events on Thursday but were led by three second-place performances; Cayden White in the 800-meter run, Vance Hoyt in the long jump and Carson Wayman, Colton Donaldson, Owen Myers and White in the distance medley relay.
BCLUW added five bronze-medal performances, including Daniel Zoske in the discus throw for the Comets' best throwing performance of the day.
GMG had the only area winner on the day, as Jay Bessman chucked the discus 129 feet even for gold. North Tama's Ty Guthrie was second in the event at 126-7 to lead the Redhawks.
Jace Aneweer had Gladbrook-Reinbeck's best finish with a fifth-place throw in the shot put.
Grundy Center boys win Belle Plaine team title
BELLE PLAINE -- Grundy Center boys track and field won the Class A title at a Belle Plaine track and field meet on Thursday.
The Spartans scored 155 points to win the eight-team Class A division, followed by Lynnville-Sully (102) and Iowa Valley (101). Meskwaki Settlement finished seventh in the Class B division, won by English Valleys with 181 points.
Grundy Center won eight events on Thursday, including five relays – the sprint medley, shuttle hurdle, 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400.
Brayden Davie, Devin Hinders, Grant Newton and Brody Zinkula ran on three of the winning relays and Pete Lebo and Judd Jirovsky were on a pair of the winning quartets.
All five winning relays have times in late-season form for the Spartans – the sprint med and 4×200 are already in range of school records set last year and the 4×400 finish was just a half-second slower than this years' Drake Relays Blue Standard for the event.
Individual winners included Brayden Wallis in the open 400, Tiernan Vokes in the 110 hurdles and Jacob Hoy in the 400 hurdles. Hoy was also second in the 110 hurdles, Vokes third in the 400 hurdles.
Meskwaki was led by two fourth-place relay finishes in the 4×100 (Cadell Buffalo, Layne Steuhm, Tenoch Snow, Devin Hoag) and sprint medley (Dontavius Slick-Driscoll, Buffalo, Hoag, Emery Roberts).
Two golds for West Marshall girls track at Perry
PERRY -- Addie Thompson and Kylee Schuler won an event each to lead West Marshall girls track and field at Thursday's Jayette Relays at Perry High School.
The Trojans were fourth in the five-team field with 104 points. PCM and Perry tied with 127 points for the team title and Woodward-Granger was third with 122 points; Nevada finished fifth with 99 points.
Thompson won the 3,000-meter run in 11:31.36, beating Perry's Lily Myers to the line by a tenth of a second. Schuler was the only girl over the bar at 5 feet even to win the high jump.
Amelia Ranson and Dalaney Eldridge each earned a pair of silvers for the Trojans; Ranson in the 100- and 400-meter hurdle events and Eldridge in the open 200 and 400 running events.
West Marshall also had two second-place relays -- Jordan Hilleman, Avery Buck, Olivia Randall and Addie Thompson in the distance medley relay and the shuttle hurdle quartet of Avery Buck, Makaylie Tarbell, Sophia Beebe and Lilie Rosedale.
