SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans outscore Mustangs in boys golf quad

CONRAD — A pair of area boys’ golf teams took aim at Oakwood Golf Course on Tuesday and were locked in throughout. Only one emerged as the victor, though.

Grundy Center got five scores of 38 or better to hold off East Marshall at the BCLUW quadrangular, winning with an incredible team score of 139. The Mustangs finished second with a sterling total of 146, followed by the host Comets (189) and Colfax-Mingo (213).

The Spartans were led by 2023 individual state champion Judd Jirovsky, who shot a 3-under-par round of 32 to take meet medalist honors ahead of teammate Jaxon Kiewiet, who shot a 1-under 34.

East Marshall’s Cody Weaver and Jackson Bidwell both finished out with 35, as did Grundy Center’s Preston Martens. Rylan Weaver brought in a 35 for the Mustangs, while Jalen Kirkpatrick and Eli Wegmann provided the Spartans’ final counting score of 38.

Wyatt Stalzer rounded out East Marshall’s impressive effort with a 39. Austin Crandon (47) and Gage Searle (48) also competed for the Mustangs.

Beau Towne led host BCLUW with his 39. The Comets also got a 44 from Aiden Frank, a 47 from Adam Frank, and a 55 from Will Feldpauch.

Spartan track takes team titles at home co-ed

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center girls and boys track and field teams won their respective team titles at the Spartan Early Bird Co-Ed at Spartan Stadium on Tuesday.

The Grundy girls scored 172 points to finish ahead of Aplington-Parkersburg (124) and Hudson (119-1/2); Gladbrook-Reinbeck was sixth with 51 points. Grundy Center’s boys won with 144.5 points to Union’s 141 points, A-P was third with 133 points and G-R finished sixth with 53 points.

Individual winners for Grundy Center were Ava Heeren in the 100- and 200-meter dash events and Grace Storjohann in the 800-meter run. The Spartans also won four relays, Riah Schrage, Jocelyn Freed, Allison Koch and Heeren in the 4×100; Raelyn Steinmeyer, Maddy Hendershot, Karlee Lynch and Storjohann in the 4×400; Evelyn Geerdes, Lynch, Heeren and Storjohann in the sprint medley and the distance medley quartet of Gracyn Lynch, Koch, Karlee Lynch and Hendershot.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Kennedy Brant was the 400-meter run champion as well as claiming gold in the high jump.

The Spartan boys won six events on Tuesday. Grant Newton and Brayden Wallis finished first in the 200 and 400, respectively; Newton was also part of the winning 4×100 along with Devin Hinders, Brody Zinkula and Thoren; Wallis was on the winning 4×400 with Aiden Hook, Zinkula and Brayden Davie. The 4×200 of Hinders, Zinkula, Newton and Davie were also winners, as was the shuttle hurdle team of Pete Lebo, Hinders, Ethan Meester and Tiernan Vokes.

Jace Aneweer was the lone champion for the Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys with a first-place showing in the shot put as well as a second-place finish in the discus.

Grundy Center boys tennis sweeps South Tama

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center boys tennis defeated South Tama, 9-0, at the George Wilhelm Sports Complex on Tuesday.

Grundy Center’s Carson Laube won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, over Tanner Large; Laube teamed with Elias Cakerice for a 6-0, 6-1 win over Large and Marten Langen at No. 1 doubles.

The Spartans won in straight sets with the exception of the No. 2 doubles match, where South Tama’s Marcus Bear and Jayce McCollister battled back to force a third set before Michael Lang and Remington Tack of the Spartans closed it out in the third set.

Grundy Center hosts Nevada on Friday; South Tama heads to Independence on Thursday.
