Bobcats just miss the medals
Feldman and Sandvick go 1-2 at 2A state doubles
IOWA CITY — The Marshalltown girls’ tennis team nearly had a state medalist doubles team.
The Bobcat duo of Kennedy Feldman and Kate Sandvick fought to the bitter end of the Class 2A girls’ state tennis tournament on Friday at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex, falling one set short of a spot in Saturday’s placewinner rounds.
Feldman and Sandvick started the day with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Iowa City West’s Sasha Postnikov and Marie Stier. The hometown Trojan duo went on to sweep Johnston’s Sidney Peterson and Zoey Studer in the second round, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to Saturday’s championship semifinals.
It just as easily could have been the Bobcat tandem playing on from Friday’s opening round, but a few unforced errors prevented MHS from picking up the first-round triumph.
On the back side of the bracket, Feldman and Sandvick found their footing but nearly stumbled, picking up a 6-3, 6-7, (10-7) triumph over Olivia Cannon and Danni Pederson of Urbandale.
The Bobcat pair led 5-1 in the second set before surrendering the lead, and the momentum carried into the super-tiebreaker third set. Marshalltown’s top doubles duo recovered to earn the three-set thriller and advance to within one match of a top-eight finish.
In the consolation quarterfinals, Feldman and Sandvick ran into Waterloo West’s No. 1 doubles squad of Sedina Begic and Anna Christensen. In the regional doubles finals, Begic and Christensen secured a 6-1, 6-3 victory over the Marshalltown tandem, but the Bobcats weren’t ready for the season to end.
Feldman and Sandvick won the opening set, 6-4, but Waterloo West’s duo rallied back with a 6-1 victory in the second set.
In the third-set super-tiebreak, the Wahawks claimed a 10-7 win to take the match.
Begic and Christensen will meet Waukee Northwest’s Kate Osier and Ella Steffensmeier on Saturday morning in the consolation semifinal. The loss eliminated the last of the Bobcat tennis teams for the season.
