Moellers wins 2 mile, MHS boys fourth at conference
OTTUMWA — The Marshalltown boys’ track and field team scored 70 points to place fourth at the Iowa Alliance Conference meet on Tuesday at Schafer Stadium in Ottumwa.
Des Moines Roosevelt won the meet with 156.5 points, followed by Ames (137), Des Moines East (84.5) and the Bobcats in the 11-team invite.
John Moellers captured Marshalltown’s lone event victory, winning the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9 minutes, 49.35 seconds.
Moellers led the Bobcats’ 2-3 finish in the 1,600 as well, scoring silver in 4:28.64. Carter Nunn captured the bronze in 4:36.32.
Nunn also ran as part of the Bobcats’ runner-up 4×800 relay team, joining Parker Gooding, Kade Randall and Myles Goldman for a time of 8:30.97.
The Bobcat quartet of Elicha Mboungou, Aiden Smitherman, Isacc Ceniceros and Moellers added a second-place finish in the distance medley with a time of 3:42.41. Smitherman added a third-place finish in the 400 hurdles (57.67) and a fourth-place result in the long jump (20 feet, 8 inches).
Kieron Sharp, Ceniceros, Carson Wright and Smitherman closed out the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 4×400 (3:35.25).
Jaxson Hinkle was fifth in the discus (130-7), and Owen Eaton took sixth in the shot put with a lifetime-best heave (47-7). The Bobcats’ sprint medley relay of Camron Holmes, LaMar Johnson, Evan Anderson and Sharp added a sixth-place finish in 1:39.68.
Marshalltown hosts its Class 4A state-qualifying meet on Thursday, May 15, at 4 p.m. at Leonard Cole Field.
